Joined David Neo and Goh Hanyan to officially open the new Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) campus at Coney Island. We first conceived this project many years ago, when I was still at MCCY. So it was especially meaningful to see it finally come to fruition. For decades, OBS has challenged young Singaporeans to step out of their comfort zones, discover what they are capable of, and build grit and resilience. There were different views on the formula for ministerial salaries, which we will continue to study. But there was broad agreement on the changes this term: updating MPs’ allowances for inflation, and raising ministerial (MR4) salaries initially to up to $1.2m, with performance-based increases to around $1.35m by the end of this term, below what an inflation-indexed adjustment would have produced. Singapore has always taken political leadership seriously. We need to keep renewing the team with capable people from different backgrounds. Political salary benchmarks have not changed for 15 years. An independent Review Committee recommended updating them, and the Government has accepted its recommendations. Serving political officeholders will receive a one-off adjustment of up to 9%, after which salaries will be adjusted according to performance and responsibilities. The Government will adopt the recommendations of an independent review committee to refine the salary structure to update for today’s context and better align the National Bonus to the socioeconomic progress of Singaporeans.
