Happy to join the Singapore Kadayanallur Muslim League (SKML) as it marks 85 years of service, solidarity and community spirit. The roots of SKML go back to the late 19th century when Tamil Muslim immigrants from Kadayanallur arrived in Singapore seeking a better life. Here, they organised themselves to provide mutual support. Over time, they grew into Singapore’s largest Indian Muslim organisation - serving the community, while also reaching beyond it to contribute to our wider society. In many ways, this reflects the Singapore story too. We look after our own, but “our own” extends beyond fa…

Joined David Neo and Goh Hanyan to officially open the new Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) campus at Coney Island. We first conceived this project many years ago, when I was still at MCCY. So it was especially meaningful to see it finally come to fruition. For decades, OBS has challenged young Singaporeans to step out of their comfort zones, discover what they are capable of, and build grit and resilience. With the new campus, we can extend the OBS experience to all Secondary 3 students, with further opportunities for them to return at the tertiary level. Our hope is for OBS to become a shared r…

Thank you to all Members who took part in the debate on political salaries, and for the suggestions raised. There were different views on the formula for ministerial salaries, which we will continue to study. But there was broad agreement on the changes this term: updating MPs’ allowances for inflation, and raising ministerial (MR4) salaries initially to up to $1.2m, with performance-based increases to around $1.35m by the end of this term, below what an inflation-indexed adjustment would have produced. This reflects a shared recognition that Singapore needs a salary framework that can sustain…

Deeply saddened by the passing of former Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa. Mr Tung was an old friend of Singapore. Under his leadership, cooperation between Singapore and Hong Kong deepened, helping to lay the foundations for the close ties we enjoy today. As the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region after its return to China, Mr Tung led Hong Kong through a defining chapter in its history. He steered the city through major challenges - including the Asian Financial Crisis and the SARS outbreak - with resilience and a deep sense of responsibility for Hong …

Singapore has always taken political leadership seriously. We need to keep renewing the team with capable people from different backgrounds. Political salary benchmarks have not changed for 15 years. An independent Review Committee recommended updating them, and the Government has accepted its recommendations. Serving political officeholders will receive a one-off adjustment of up to 9%, after which salaries will be adjusted according to performance and responsibilities. As PM, I carry ultimate responsibility for this decision. For 5 years, assuming I remain PM, I will donate the full increase…
