Language creates reality. Language shapes images in the mind.
Phrases like “bound to a wheelchair,” “deaf-mute,” or “suffering from” create negative images about people with disabilities. As a result, disabled people are often perceived as sufferers, as victims whose difficult fate must be overcome, or as heroes. Their ordinary humanity usually fades into the background.
