On September 7, 2026, Jamaica submitted a petition to His Majesty King Charles III seeking guidance on three key questions:

☑️ Was the enslavement of Africans in Jamaica under British rule lawful? ☑️ Did it violate the international legal principles of the time? ☑️ Does the United Kingdom have a legal obligation to provide reparatory remedies?

Yesterday I provided this update during a meeting of the High-Level Global Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice.

This process that we have embarked upon is about seeking truth, acknowledgement, justice, repair and reconciliation for historical injustices.

Jamaica remains committed to constructive engagement as we continue this important journey.
