We have seen our territory fragmented, our ports besieged, our capital in the hands of invaders. We have exhausted ourselves in internal wars, in pointless intrigues. Our history has thus familiarized us with tragedy. This encounter between beauty and brutality seeks its resolution in catarsis. Yet we refused to become a tragedy ourselves. From each celebration, we were able to create an aesthetic victory. We can attest to the hundreds of walls that our artists have covered in color to tell the Mexican people their own story and make them proud. We also witness the thousands of crystalline lenses that continue to hold up a faithful and uncompromising mirror to us. I want to believe that this history has predisposed Mexico to be a friend to the peoples of the world, a supportive partner in the toughest trials, and a country capable of continuing on its path at its own pace, even when all compasses seem to be broken. Because Mexico is a friend of the Haitian people, our embassy has remained open without interruption since 1943 after the 2010 earthquake. We have contributed to the construction of schools, clinics, and public markets because the suffering of the Haitian people cannot leave us indifferent. We have been committed to strengthening Haiti's armed forces since 2018. We have welcomed among us thousands of Haitians who, fleeing violence or in search of new opportunities, have made Mexico their home. Because we believe in the restorative power of art, we work with our local partners to preserve and promote Haitian cultural and artistic heritage. We believe in the Haitian people's ability to recover because they possess the strength and talent necessary to achieve this. Ladies and gentlemen, Mexico, as a sovereign nation, respects the sovereignty of its partners and considers this respect an essential condition for peace between nations. We know that the independence movements that spread throughout Latin America in the 19th century, following the American and Haitian examples, triumphed because they expressed the legitimate will of the people to take their destiny into their own hands. This aspiration for freedom has lost none of its strength. Today, the time has come for the Haitian people to express themselves at the ballot box on the future they wish to build. Mexico calls on all political actors to put aside their individual interests and work to ensure that all Haitians can exercise their right to decide the future of their country, to live in dignity, to live in peace. We must work together to ensure that the electoral process is a step towards ending the current situation. This is the very least the world owes to the country that fought to give meaning to the word freedom. a truly universal reach. This is the best tribute that Haitians today can pay to the memory of their ancestors. Dear friends, we have the daunting privilege of living in a time when deep tensions threaten to fracture an international order which, despite all its imperfections, has thus far preserved us from a new world war. But troubled times force us to surpass ourselves. It is up to us collectively to get through the trials of our time without sinking into its new abyss. Helping Haitians to take back control of their country's future also means choosing a world of solidarity and fraternity in the face of increasingly divisive paths that would convince us that withdrawal, indifference and confrontation are our only horizon. It is up to us to prove that another one exists. Trusting in your indulgence, I now wish to address a few words in Spanish to my compatriots. The Mexican community is a taste of our reunion one year more to celebrate the independence of new Mexico. This commemoration goes beyond the scope of a national celebration. As the world's first independent Black republic, Haiti carried a universal message of emancipation from 1804 onwards, which inspired liberation movements throughout the Americas.
