The New Social Housing Programme was conceptualised in 2018 to assist Jamaicans who are living in very difficult circumstances and have access to land that can be legally developed. To date, about 350 homes have been completed, with approximately 65 more at various stages of construction.

We are also seeing the need for housing grow. Too many Jamaican families are living in informal settlements without proper access to roads, water, garbage collection and other essential services. We cannot allow informal development to determine how Jamaica grows.

We have to plan properly, make land available at affordable prices and ensure that the land is suitable and has the necessary infrastructure.

For those receiving homes through this programme, there is also a responsibility. Maintain the home, keep it in good condition and ensure that everything connected to the house, including light and water, is legal.

For me, this is what government service should mean, helping people when they need it and giving families a fair opportunity to build better lives.
