The Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond TD, will today travel to New York for a series of engagements as part of UN High-Level Week.Minister Richmond's programme reflects Ireland's commitment to international development, humanitarian action and multilateralism at a time of growing global need and pressure on the international system.Speaking ahead of the visit, Minister Richmond said: “At a time of global instability, when development and humanitarian systems and budgets are under pressure like never before, we are seeing the real impact on human lives of cutbacks in development assistance. Access to medicines for the poorest people have been reduced sharply and the great progress we have made in tackling infectious diseases such as HIV, TB and malaria is now at risk. This makes the role of multilateralism and the UN more important than ever.”“I am travelling to New York to advance discussions on education, health, nutrition, and food security. These are the issues that affect people every day around the world and are key priorities for Ireland’s international development programme.”“In Ireland’s role asPresidency of the Council of the European Union, I will convene my fellow EU Development Ministers at Ireland’s Permanent Mission to the UN for an urgent discussion on the future of development cooperation.”“In this meeting and across all my engagements, I will be bringing the message that we need to work together to ensure the UN’s development system remains effective, efficient and responsive to evolving global challenges, including an enduring poverty crisis and an emerging food emergency.”Along with hosting EU Development Ministers, Minister Richmond will participate in a range of high-level engagements including on education, food security, humanitarian action, the protection of civilians and the future of international development cooperation.
