At this moment, the South African Police Service is operating under intense public scrutiny. The eyes of the South African public are looking at you as the police officers of our country. Serious allegations and revelations before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry have raised legitimate concerns about leadership, accountability, and institutional integrity within parts of our police system. These matters must be confronted. We cannot run away from them. And we cannot hide from them. They must be investigated thoroughly. Where there has been wrongdoing, there must be accountability. Where systems have failed, they must be repaired. Where criminal interests have sought to infiltrate the institutions responsible for fighting crime, they must be rooted out. There can be no compromise on the integrity of the South African Police Service. When our people confront or interface with government, quite often, the responder that they always encounter is the police of our country. But neither this moment should lead to paralysis or demoralization amongst the thousands of honest police officers who report for duty every day. It must instead become a moment of renewal. It may be a moment of deep concern as we continue to watch our television screens and see the revelations shocking and devastating as they might be. They should never discourage us from doing our work. Instead they must lead us to say, "This is a moment of renewal." The South African Police Service must remain focused on its constitutional mandate to prevent and to combat crime, to maintain police order, to protect and secure the inhabitants of the Republic of South Africa and their property, and to uphold and enforce the the law.
