New York, Sept. 19 (SANA)The International Organization for Migration (IOM) warned that supplies for the joint humanitarian corridor inSudancould run out within less than two weeks and those operations could halt by the end of the year without additional funding.

IOM spokesperson Zoe Brennan told reporters inGenevaon Friday that the lack of adequate shelter for 8.6 million displaced people, amid continued fighting andheavy rainsand flooding, was increasing risks of disease, gender-based violence, family separation and further displacement, particularly in overcrowded locations.

“If operational capacity is lost, it cannot simply be restored once funding becomes available,” Brennan said, adding that rebuilding the system would be costly and time-consuming.

The organization needs $15 million to maintain the humanitarian corridor at minimum operational capacity for 12 months, allowing it to support 305,000 people, Brennan said.

She added that $42 million in funding would allow the corridor to expand its operations and provide immediate life-saving assistance to up to 1 million people.

Thehumanitarian corridoris used by more than 100 organizations to deliver essential shelter materials, non-food items and hygiene supplies to people in need across Sudan.

IOM said the corridor has supported more than 2.84 million people in Sudan since July 2023.

The warning comes after IOM said on Sept. 14 that Sudan’s humanitarian response system was at risk of collapse within weeks due to continued fighting, rising displacement and growinghumanitarian needs.
