Al-Hamra Theater reopens after restoration efforts in Damascus
Damascus, Sept. 19 (SANA)Al-Hamra Theaterin Damascus has reclaimed its place in Syria’s cultural and artistic scene, announcing the readiness of its historic stage to welcome creators following comprehensive restoration works.
The reopening coincides with plans to begin renovation of al-Qabbani Theater within a month.
The landmark event was celebrated with an official and popular ceremony attended byMinister of CultureMohammad Yasin Saleh, Minister of Communications Abdul-Salam Haikal, and Minister of Finance Mohammed Yisr Barnieh, alongside artists, intellectuals, and media figures.
The program featured musical performances by “Ban the Band” led by Simon Marish, a dance show by “Dance” troupe, and a documental-Hamra Theaterary highlighting the restoration process.
Minister Al-Saleh emphasized the importance of theater as a space for knowledge, dialogue, and social awareness, capable of offering critical readings of society and its issues.
He noted ongoing efforts to revive cultural activities across provinces, including the Syrian General Book Organization, the Arab Encyclopedia, children’s book fairs, and the Damascus International Book Fair.
Director of Theaters and Music, artist Nawar Bulbul, recalled the legacy of al-Hamra Theater, stressing its role as a platform for addressing social wounds and uniting Syrians despite differing views.
He highlighted that the restoration was achieved through donations from citizens and culture enthusiasts, allowing the state to focus resources on reconstruction, camps, and essential needs.
Minister Haikal affirmed that rehabilitating theaters and cultural institutions revives vital spaces of Syria’s cultural memory, underscoring the importance of sustaining such efforts.
Bulbul also announced that renovation of al-Qabbani Theater will begin within a month, with plans to restore theaters in Deir Ezzor and Homs through community initiatives and donations.
The reopening of al-Hamra Theater marks a new phase in revitalizing Syria’s theatrical and artistic movement, restoring cultural venues to their role in Damascus and other provinces.
