Damascus, Sept. 19 (SANA)Syria has approved theL602 air routethrough the country’s eastern airspace nearDeir Ezzoras part of efforts to improve air connectivity between Gulf countries and Europe, President of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air TransportOmar Hosarisaid.

Hosari said in a post on X on Friday that the route was approved after months of technical studies, air traffic simulations and coordination with neighboring countries and relevant organizations.

The route is part of a broader project to develop Syria’s air route network and improve the efficiency of its airspace, providing more direct flight paths between theGulfandEurope, Hosari added.

He affirmed that 2,188 overflights had been recorded on the corridor associated with the route since operations began through the evening of Sept. 18.

The move comes asSyriaworks to modernize air navigation infrastructure at its airports.

Hosari said calibration and flight testing of the ILS/DME system atDamascus International Airporthad been completed to CAT II standards and that the system was now operational without restrictions.

The upgrade is intended to improve the reliability and safety of takeoffs and landings, particularly in low-visibility conditions.

He said developing the aviation sector involves not only airports and aircraft but also upgrading airspace and navigation systems and making greater operational use of Syria’s geographic position.

L602 runs through the eastern sector of Syrian airspace and is linked in aeronautical navigation data to the ELEXI-DRZ-GAZ route, giving it a role in air traffic between the Gulf region and Europe.

Hosari earlier stressed that the authority was working to gradually rebuild Syria’s international air connectivity. He cited the return of direct flights between Berlin and Damascus and the resumption of operations by several airlines and European destinations as part of that process.kA/MZN
