Copenhagen, Sept. 19 (SANA)Danish Prime MinisterMette Frederiksensaid a planned security agreement between Denmark,Greenlandand theUnited Stateswould strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Frederiksen said Friday that the agreement would strengthen common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic and was therefore beneficial toNATOand Europe. The three governments are expected to sign the agreement on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly next week.

She said the agreement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark as well as the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination. After it is signed, the agreement will be subject to the necessary parliamentary procedures before entering into force, according to the Danish Prime Minister’s Office.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen welcomed the planned agreement, saying it would strengthen the security of Greenland, Denmark, the United States and the Western alliance while recognizing Greenland’s interests and its role in international cooperation.

U.S. President DonaldTrumpannounced Friday that an agreement had been reached, saying it would give Washington “permanent control” over Greenland’s security. Denmark and Greenland, however, emphasized that the agreement recognizes the kingdom’s sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly argued that U.S. control of Greenland is important for strategic and security reasons, a position that has generated tensions with Denmark and concern within NATO.kA/MZN
