Taoiseach Micheál Martin will meet with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham today [Friday 18 September] in No. 10 North in Manchester.

During the meeting, the Taoiseach and the Prime Minister will discuss the Ireland-UK bilateral relationship andUK-Ireland 2030strategic programme of cooperation, matters related to Northern Ireland and EU and international issues.

The Taoiseach and Prime Minister will also have an opportunity to meet with members of the local Irish community and representatives from the wider Irish community in Greater Manchester.

Speaking prior to his departure for Manchester, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said:

“I am looking forward to meeting UK Prime Minister Burnham and reaffirming the strength and importance of the relationship between our two countries. The immense potential of this bilateral relationship is recognised in, and being realised through, our UK-Ireland 2030 programme of strategic cooperation. This meeting is an opportunity to assess progress across the programme since the most recent UK-Ireland Summit in Cork in March, and to inject further momentum into our partnership as we look ahead to the 2027 Summit to be hosted by the UK.

We will also discuss a range of matters relating to Northern Ireland, including the Joint Framework on addressing the legacy of the Troubles, and the importance now of making progress in implementing what has been agreed for the sake of victims and survivors, and wider reconciliation across these islands. We will also discuss how best to work in partnership to sustain the overall success of the Good Friday Agreement in all its parts in the time ahead.

Our discussions will also cover EU and international issues, including Ireland’s current Presidency of the Council of the EU and the next EU-UK Summit, and the situation in Ukraine, Gaza and the Middle East more broadly.''
