Minister Cummins welcomes CSO data showing significant increase in planning permissions

Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, John Cummins TD, has welcome today’s CSO figures showing a significant uplift in planning permissions.

Published this morning, TheCSO figuresshow an increase of 60% in the total number of dwelling units approved in Q2 2026 – almost 12,000 units – which is up from the 7,447 units in Q2 2025. The Q2 figures are the highest number of units approved since Q4 2021. The broader picture is also positive with the figure for planning permissions in the first half of 2026 28% higher than the first half of 2025.

We are continuing to see housing indicators moving in the right direction. These latest planning permission figures – taken with the positivecommencements datapublished today by our department – shows we are moving in the right direction and building a sustainable pipeline of new homes.

I’m particularly glad to see a steep increase in the number of apartment planning approvals, which suggests the measures this Government has taken to incentivise much-needed apartment building are starting to have an impact.”
