Damascus, Sep. 17 (SANA)Head of theGeneral Authority for Borders and CustomsQutaiba Badawi discussed Thursday withUNHCRRepresentative in Syria Kevin James Allen and his accompanying delegation ways to strengthen cooperation and support the voluntary, safe and dignified return of Syrian refugees and displaced people.

The meeting covered measures to facilitate the passage of returnees through border crossings and enhance field coordination to provide assistance to the most vulnerable groups. The discussions also addressed requirements for developing infrastructure, services and equipment at border crossings to accommodate increased passenger traffic and improve reception conditions, according to a statement on Telegram.

The two sides also highlighted the importance of linking return efforts with recovery and economic empowerment programs by supporting small businesses, developing skills and creating job opportunities to help returnees restore their livelihoods and strengthen the foundations for sustainable stability.

Badawi outlined the authority’s efforts to develop and expand border crossings and organize passenger and cargo routes. He stressed the importance of cooperation with UNHCR in supporting these efforts, providing necessary facilities for returnees and taking their humanitarian needs into account during border procedures.

The UNHCR delegation, for its part, commended the existing cooperation with the authority and the level of coordination among teams working at the border. It also reviewed areas of logistical and technical support and efforts to mobilize international assistance to meet the needs of returnees and host communities.

On August 6, UNHCR in its second-quarter 2026 comprehensive report on Syrian returnees, said around 1.72 million Syrians have returned to the country, as the growing pace of returns brings renewed focus on housing, livelihoods and access to basic services.
