An Taisce and Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment encourage a swell of support – to clean litter from local beaches, waterways and towns
The Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment is proud to support An Taisce’s annual Big Beach Clean, which takes place from 18 to 20 September marking the end of the summer bathing season.
This is the biggest annual single event aimed at cleaning, maintaining and protecting the Irish coast. Volunteers across the country are asked to join the action – to clean litter from their local beaches, waterways and towns, all while contributing to a global effort to combat marine litter.
The Big Beach Clean is held as part of the International Coastal Cleanup, which is a global beach cleaning action led by Ocean Conservancy. Upon signing up, participants will receive all the equipment they need to conduct a successful beach clean and complete a marine litter survey.
In 2025 over 500 groups registered to host a clean-up nationwide, with almost 11,000 volunteers ultimately removing over 60 tonnes of litter from our marine environment. The Irish Government has supported An Taisce’s Clean Coast programme for over 20 years. The Big Beach Clean now plays an integral annual part in this.
Commenting on the Big Beach Clean, Minister of State at the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment Timmy Dooley said:
“I am delighted to see An Taisce’s Big Beach Clean is running again this year. It is a great activity, removes so much rubbish from our shoreline and promotes the positive message of caring for the Irish marine environment.
