Before President von der Leyen takes the floor for her 2026 State of the Union address, let's look back at a few examples of what has been delivered over the past year. When it comes to kids safety online Europe believes in parents and not in profits. The Commission is already acting under the Digital Services Act, it has opened investigations into TikTok for addictive design Meta, for failing to protect minors and X, over the spread of child abuse material. A home is not just four walls and a roof. It is safety. It is warmth. It's a place for family and friends. But for too many Europeans today, home has become a source of anxiety. The Commission launched an ambitious plan to work with all institutions, Member States and stakeholders to increase housing supply, triggering investment and reforms, addressing short-term rentals in areas under housing stress and supporting the people most affected. We will lay out our plan to help eradicate poverty by 2050. We know how hard times have been for so many families, how costs have rocketed up. This is why the EU’s Anti-Poverty strategy was adopted in May this year. It addresses poverty at every stage of life. The goal is to help Europeans find affordable places to live, work, and raise their families. It is the EU’s first common framework to tackle poverty at its roots. We have to be faster, smarter and we have to be more European. This is why I will present a Single Market roadmap to 2028. With EU Inc. proposal, anyone will be able to set up a company online in 48 hours, from anywhere in Europe for less than €100. The three institutions signed a Joint Roadmap to secure our long-term prosperity, with concrete actions and a clear deadline of end 2027. We need to double down on diversification and on partnerships like Mexico, like Mercosur, or finalising negotiations on a historic deal with India. In January, the EU and Mercosur sealed a trade agreement, slashing billions in tariffs, securing access to key raw materials and opening new opportunities, while keeping European farmers protected and our food safety standards in place. The EU and India concluded the “mother of all deals” building a market of almost 2 billion people. While in May, we signed the modernised global agreement with Mexico. The rise in information manipulation and disinformation is dividing our societies. It is not only eroding trust in the truth, but also in democracy itself. We launched the European Democracy Shield a society-wide initiative to empower strong and resilient democracies and to foster citizens’ engagement. We also set up the European Centre for Democratic Resilience as a new hub for exchange to empower, protect and promote strong and resilient democracies across the EU. Europe must be ready to take responsibility for its own security. This includes the SAFE programme. 18 national defence plans have been approved under SAFE, and €12 billion have been disbursed for defence procurement, with a special focus on Europe's defence industry. The Commission also launched five large-scale joint projects covering drones, maritime defence, space capabilities, air and missile defence and the eastern flank. Europe will frontload €6 billion from the ERA loan and enter into a drone alliance with Ukraine. Ukraine has the ingenuity. What it needs now is scale and together we can provide it so that Ukraine keeps its edge and Europe strengthens its own. Europe backed that commitment. The Commission launched the EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance to make both sides work closely on the development of drone and counter-drone technologies.
