The initiative, championed by President Boakai, is designed to complement the ongoing efforts of county and municipal authorities to keep cities and communities clean, safe, and environmentally healthy.

Phase One of the Presidential Clean Cities Initiative is scheduled to begin on October 1, 2026, and will be implemented across eight counties, covering 14 cities and one township.

The first phase will engage 1,250 young people and 30 Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in sanitation activities, environmental initiatives, and public awareness campaigns, with plans for the program to expand to additional parts of the country.

Participating locations include Monrovia and Paynesville in Montserrado County; Ganta, Saniquellie, and Tappita in Nimba County; Gbarnga and Totota in Bong County; Foya and Voinjama in Lofa County; Buchanan in Grand Bassa County; Kakata City, Unification City, and Schieffelin Township in Margibi County; Tubmanburg in Bomi County; and Zwedru in Grand Gedeh County.

The Presidential Clean Cities Initiative forms part of the Administration’s broader efforts to improve community conditions while providing young Liberians with opportunities to participate directly in national development.

Applications are now open to eligible young people and Community-Based Organizations in the targeted areas. Interested applicants may complete the designated application form or submit available hard-copy applications within the established application period.

Through the initiative, the Government seeks to encourage greater community ownership of public spaces and strengthen collaboration among citizens, youth groups, Community Based Organizations (CBOs), and local authorities in addressing sanitation and environmental challenges.

President Boakai has called for collective action in maintaining clean and healthy communities, emphasizing the role of citizens and local institutions in sustaining improvements in the nation’s cities and towns.

The Presidential Clean Cities Initiative will commence with its first phase on October 1, 2026, with subsequent phases expected to extend the intervention to additional counties and communities across Liberia.
