Dominica’s 48th Independence celebrations will be held under the theme“Our Journey, Our Legacy, Our Future,”with a wide-ranging programme of cultural, community, religious and national activities scheduled from September 19 to November 4, 2026.

Minister for Culture, Youth, Sports and Community Development, Honourable Greta Roberts, announced the programme during a press conference on Wednesday, describing Independence as a special period for Dominicans to celebrate their culture, honour the contributions of previous generations and consider their responsibility for the country’s continued development.

“The theme captures the full story of our nation. It calls us to reflect on the journey that has brought us to this point, to preserve the legacy entrusted to us and to work together to create a stronger future for the generations who will follow,” Minister Roberts said.

The celebrations will begin on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20 with the National Days of Prayer and Thanksgiving. Churches and faith-based organisations are being encouraged to include special prayers for Dominica in their services.

“Let us begin this season by giving thanks to God for His continued blessings upon Dominica and by praying for peace, unity, protection, wisdom and prosperity for our nation,” the Minister urged.

The Official Opening Ceremony will be held on Friday, September 25 at the State House Conference Centre, followed by the Official Opening Walk-Through Parade at the Dominica Botanic Gardens on Saturday, September 26.

October will again be observed as Patriotism and Heritage Month, with particular emphasis on building national pride among children and young people. Dominicans are encouraged to wear national and cultural attire and participate in Had Kweyol Fridays on October 2, 9, 16 and 23. The October 16 observance will include Jounen Panyen, while October 23 will feature Jounen Chapo Pay.

District cultural festivals will also be held across the island, providing communities with opportunities to showcase local music, dance, dress, cuisine, traditions and talent.

Other activities on the calendar include the Independence Art Exhibition and History Week, E.O. LeBlanc Memorial Lecture, National Emblems Week, Flag Day, Creole in the Street and Market Day with a Difference celebrations.

National Heritage Day will be observed in Paix Bouche on Sunday, October 18. The event will highlight the history, character and contribution of the host community.

From October 19 to 22, Ti Vilaj Kweyol will transform the Dominica Botanic Gardens into a centre for the celebration of Dominican food, music, craft, language and culture.

The National Miss Wob Dwiyet Pageant will be held on October 21, followed by the National Madam Wob Dwiyet Pageant on October 28. Both events will take place at the Massacre Indoor Facility.

The World Creole Music Festival is scheduled for October 23 to 25 at Windsor Park Sports Stadium, featuring Dominican, regional and international performers.

Young people will take centre stage at the National Youth Rally on October 29. Jounen Kweyol and the National Dress Parade will follow on October 30, with the Cultural Extravaganza and Eat Fish Day scheduled for October 31.

The National Cultural Gala will be held at the Botanic Gardens on Sunday, November 1, ahead of the National Day Observance Ceremony on Tuesday, November 3.

The celebrations will conclude with the National Day of Community Service on Wednesday, November 4. This year’s observance will combine community beautification with practical infrastructure projects across the country.

Minister Roberts invited Dominicans at home and abroad to participate fully in the celebrations by displaying the national flag, wearing national and cultural attire, attending community activities and supporting local artistes, musicians, farmers, vendors, designers and small businesses.

“Independence is a time to celebrate who we are, remember those whose sacrifices brought us this far and recommit ourselves to building a peaceful, united and prosperous Dominica,” she said.
