Damascus, Sept. 15 (SANA)Syria’s National Commission for Transitional Justiceheld talks with representatives of theBelgian development agency Enabelon strengthening cooperation in transitional justice, supporting recovery and promoting long-term stability in Syria.Commission Chairman Abdul Basit Abdul Latif met Patrick Gaudissart, Enabel’s regional director for the Middle East, and Mohammad Rawabdeh, the agency’s strategic adviser for the region, the commission said on its Telegram channel Tuesday.

The talks focused on boosting institutional cooperation and drawing on international experience in transitional justice, as well as supporting reparations and property rights programs and developing legal and psychological assistance for victims and their families.

Abdul Latif outlined the commission’s field visits to 12 Syrian provinces and its work on a draft transitional justice law developed with the participation of victims, survivors and civil society organizations.

The proposed legislation includes the establishment of a reparations fund, according to the commission.

Abdul Latif said economic recovery was an urgent national priority given the scale of damage across the country, adding that transitional justice was closely linked to recovery and sustainable stability.

Rawabdeh expressed interest in supporting transitional justice, peace and stability programs and stressed the importance of coordinating with the commission to identify its priorities and needs so that assistance could be directed more effectively.

Syria has been developing an institutional framework for transitional justice since Dec. 8, 2024. President Ahmad al-Sharaa issued Decree No. 20 on May 17, 2025, establishing the National Commission for Transitional Justice as an independent body with legal personality and financial and administrative autonomy, with a mandate covering all Syrian territory.

Since its establishment, the commission has worked at the government, community and international levels on a process aimed at uncovering the truth, strengthening justice and accountability, providing reparations and preventing the recurrence of violations.
