Northeast Development Plan to Guide Growth Around International Airport
The Government of Dominica is developing a comprehensive plan to guide the orderly growth of the Northeast as construction of the international airport advances.
Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Honourable Melissa Poponne-Skerrit, announced that the Physical Planning Division is expected to complete the Northeast Development Plan in the coming months.
She made the announcement during Monday’s handover of 16 climate-resilient homes at Woodford Hill.
The plan will provide a framework for the strategic use of land across the area, identifying opportunities for housing, agriculture, sports, tourism, recreation, commerce and industry.
Minister Poponne-Skerrit said the international airport is expected to bring new business, investment and employment opportunities to Woodford Hill, Wesley and surrounding communities. The development plan will help ensure that this expected growth is properly managed and delivers tangible benefits to residents.
“I see Woodford Hill and Wesley becoming one of Dominica’s newest urban centres,” she said.
According to the Minister, hundreds of acres of land in the Northeast could be strategically developed for residential and commercial activity. The plan will provide residents, landowners and potential investors with greater guidance on the types of development suitable for different areas.
Minister Poponne-Skerrit said the Government will also provide support in physical planning, property and legal matters, construction management, resilient building and skills training.
She encouraged residents to begin preparing for the opportunities associated with the international airport by developing marketable skills, investing in small businesses and making productive use of available land.
The Minister also extended an invitation to Dominicans from the Northeast who reside overseas to return home, invest and contribute their experience and expertise to the region’s growth.
“The opportunity is here. The land is here. The plans are coming. All we need is you,” she declared.
