BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- For BRICS, solid practical cooperation among its 11 member countries and 10 partner countries is essential to deliver more concrete gains and meaningful progress. That was a key message delivered by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the recent 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

Beginning in 2006 with four members, the mechanism has become the world's most influential platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries. BRICS countries must seize the historical initiative, rally the Global South, be an active, stabilizing and positive force in international affairs, and advance the well-being of all humanity, Xi urged.

Since its inception, the BRICS mechanism has been closely linked with the aspirations of emerging markets and developing countries. The members now have both the capacity and responsibility to amplify their common voice in international affairs and work with fellow developing countries toward common prosperity.

As BRICS cooperation enters a new stage of development, the task is clear: to make it broader, deeper and more effective.

In New Delhi, Xi put forward five initiatives aimed precisely at that goal: the open source and inclusive artificial intelligence (AI) initiative, the trade and investment facilitation initiative, the digital industry cooperation initiative, the intelligent manufacturing cooperation initiative, and the science and technology talent development initiative.

These proposals tackle some of the most consequential factors shaping the global economy today, with technological innovation as a common thread.

A new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, epitomized by the rapid development of AI, is reshaping the pattern of global development. Leveraging AI for economic growth and social good would be essential for promoting a just, fair, equitable and prosperous future for all countries, especially those of the Global South.

In this regard, Xi called on BRICS to become a "pioneer in advancing innovation-driven development" at the summit, pointing out the future direction of BRICS practical cooperation.

More importantly, China's proposals are backed by concrete measures.

China will take the lead in establishing a BRICS AI open source community, push for establishing a BRICS digital ecosystem cloud platform, and assist fellow BRICS countries in building smart factories. It also proposes a BRICS special economic zone partnership and a BRICS engineer cultivation alliance.

These steps embody an enduring feature of China's approach to BRICS cooperation: turning consensus into action and proposals into tangible results.

BRICS is not a talking shop, but a task force that gets things done. Its vitality comes from action, and its appeal comes from results.

This year marks the beginning of China's 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030). By aligning its development with the needs of fellow BRICS countries and the broader Global South, China is injecting fresh impetus into greater BRICS cooperation and demonstrating through concrete action its commitment to common development.■
