President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has highlighted the importance of ensuring that Maldivian people have a voice in shaping the future of their nation, that their rights are protected, and that those entrusted with power remain accountable to them.

He made the statement in a message issued to commemorate the International Day of Democracy.

In his message, the President stated that democracy endures when people are heard, their rights are protected and those entrusted with power remain accountable to the people they serve.

The President recognised the contributions of people whose pursuit of participation, representation and accountability has helped shape the democratic world. He stressed that each generation has a responsibility to protect, strengthen and pass on democracy, beginning with safeguarding the rights that give democracy its meaning.

The President further emphasised that democracy and human rights are inseparable, highlighting freedom of expression, equality, dignity and meaningful participation as the foundations upon which democracy stands.

President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening these foundations through greater transparency and accountability, stronger institutions and wider participation in national decision-making. He further stated that the Administration will continue to open pathways for youth and women to lead, contribute and shape the future.

Concluding his message, the President stated that the work of democracy is reflected in how the country is governed, rights are protected, people are heard and those in positions of power remain accountable to the people. He called for a renewed commitment to a Maldives where rights are protected, institutions are strong and power remains accountable to the people.
