Washington, Sept. 15 (SANA)The US House Rules Committee has advanced a bipartisan bill aimed at imposing toughersanctionsonRussiaover the war inUkraine, clearing a procedural hurdle ahead of a possible vote by the full House later this week.

The legislation would authorize US PresidentDonald Trumpto impose sanctions on individuals acting on behalf of the Russian government if they obstruct peace negotiations with Ukraine, violate a future peace agreement or undermine the Ukrainian government.

Under the proposed measures, sanctions could include visa restrictions and asset freezes targeting Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, certain military commanders and foreign individuals who knowingly provide defense equipment to Russian forces.

The bill would also allow the president to impose tariffs of up to 500 percent on goods imported from Russia and countries involved in trade with Russian-origin uranium and petroleum products.

The House Rules Committee’s approval is expected to pave the way for a vote by the full chamber later this week. The US Senate approved the legislation last month by an 86-11 vote.

The measure, which has received bipartisan backing, was previously promoted in the Senate by the late Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), according to US media reports.

The move comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Trump on Sept. 12 to impose tougher and immediate sanctions on Russia, saying they were needed to limit Moscow’s ability to produce missiles.
