His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and The Honourable Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, held official talks today as part of the Prime Minister’s State Visit to the Maldives.

The discussions, led by President Dr Muizzu and Prime Minister Anwar, took place this morning at the President’s Office.

During the talks, President Dr Muizzu expressed his appreciation for Malaysia’s longstanding contributions to the national development of the Maldives. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed his pleasure at being in the Maldives and commended the leadership of President Dr Muizzu.

The two leaders reviewed the existing bilateral ties and explored avenues to broaden cooperation across key sectors, including Islamic affairs, defence, trade and investment, healthcare, and tourism. They also discussed ways to explore cooperation in natural resources and address the challenges faced by Maldivians residing in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Prime Minister agreed in principle to commence negotiations on Preferential Trade Agreement.

The talks concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to deepening collaboration on shared international priorities, including the Palestinian cause, as well as strengthening coordination at the United Nations and other multilateral fora.

The Maldives and Malaysia have maintained 58 years of close diplomatic relations, characterised by frequent high-level exchanges, robust people-to-people connections, and enduring development partnerships.
