His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the President of the Republic of Maldives, and The Honourable Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, delivered press statements today at the President's Office as part of the Prime Minister's State Visit.

President Dr Muizzu described the visit as a strong reaffirmation of the enduring 58-year partnership between the two brotherly nations, noting that it reciprocated the successful engagements from his official visit to Malaysia in April 2025.

He highlighted that both leaders reviewed existing frameworks, agreed to maintain regular consultations through multilateral platforms, such as the United Nations (UN), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Commonwealth, and witnessed the exchange of new cooperation agreements in Defence and Islamic Affairs.

Addressing economic and financial ties, the President expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s continued support through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) and scholarships.

Building on these developmental ties, the President noted plans to enhance visa facilitation, foster joint research, and improve consular support for Maldivian citizens. Additionally, the leaders agreed to initiate negotiations for a Preferential Trade Agreement and invited Malaysian investment in renewable energy, digital infrastructure, construction, and Islamic finance, alongside expanding cooperation in tourism and the Halal industry.

On regional and international matters, the President reaffirmed solidarity with Palestine, welcomed cooperation through regional and international platforms, and emphasised a shared resolve heading toward COP31 to secure climate finance and protect the 1.5°C threshold for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

In his press statement, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude for the hospitality extended and emphasising a shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit. He commended the leadership and wisdom of President Dr Muizzu and the principled stand taken by the Maldives Government. The Prime Minister also announced decision of the government of Malaysia to extend a currency swap facility of USD 100 million and to include the Maldives in the Graduate Pass Scheme of Malaysia.
