Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Transport Minister Chris Bishop today announced $3.5 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) to replace Albert Burn Bridge on State Highway 6 (SH6) in Otago.

Mr Jones says reliable infrastructure is essential to Otago's economy.

“Regional economies cannot grow without dependable infrastructure. Businesses need to get their goods to market, visitors need to reach their destinations, and communities need connections they can count on,” Mr Jones says.

“The Regional Infrastructure Fund is about backing the infrastructure that makes regional economic growth possible. Replacing Albert Burn Bridge will help protect an important link for Otago’s economy.

“This is a practical investment in the region’s future. We’re helping keep freight moving, businesses connected and communities open for business.”

Albert Burn Bridge is approximately 140 years old and is supported by heritage dry-stone abutments that provide limited seismic resilience. Further deterioration or earthquake damage could require closure of the route and a diversion of approximately 52 kilometres.

"Albert Burn Bridge has served the region well for generations, but replacement is now needed to ensure this important route remains safe and reliable," Mr Bishop says.

"The Government is committed to looking after critical transport infrastructure and making investments that strengthen network resilience before significant problems emerge."

Design and consenting work is expected to begin within six months, with construction expected to commence in 2027.
