Minister of State at the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment Timmy Dooley spoke today (Monday) on behalf of the European Union during the opening plenary of this year's General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. The IAEA plays a fundamental role in promoting, sustaining, and enhancing global nuclear safety and security.

The General Conference is an annual event and one of the two policy-making organs of the IAEA. This year marks a significant milestone in the history of the Agency – the 70th consecutive annual meeting of the IAEA Member States. As Ireland is the current holder of the EU Presidency, Minister Dooley delivered the EU Statement during the opening session of the General Conference.

Ireland supports the IAEA and the important expertise and impartiality the agency provides. Over the course of the week, the conference will discuss key issues regarding nuclear safety and security, including at Ukraine's nuclear facilities, Iran’s nuclear programme, and the importance of nuclear safeguards and safety.

"I am pleased to be here today at the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference in Vienna fulfilling Ireland's EU Presidency responsibility to speak on behalf of the European Union in support of the important work of the IAEA.

"The IAEA plays a fundamental role in promoting, sustaining, and enhancing global nuclear safety and security. Ireland supports the IAEA and the important expertise and impartiality the Agency provides. Ireland is committed to nuclear safety and radiation protection, in accordance with IAEA standards.

"The Agency also provides crucial support for the development and application of nuclear science and technology, which aligns with Ireland's global development programmes and helps advance the collective effort to realise the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

"At this time of rising global challenges and tensions, effective multilateralism is needed more than ever to meet the challenges of the moment. Ireland has an important duty to speak on behalf of the EU in this moment, and we are committed to strengthening the EU's role as a principled international actor."
