At the same time, BRICS offers crucial geoeconomic advantages through the critical mass of its vast integrated market, opening opportunities for trade diversification and enabling member economies to reduce their overreliance on traditional Western markets. These synergies can serve as an impetus for economic growth and shared prosperity. Yet we cannot speak of inclusive growth and prosperity while war drives energy prices higher and threatens the sea lanes on which our economies depend. Israel’s aggression in West Asia has reached far beyond the parties directly involved, with countries that have no part in this war now paying the price through higher inflation and uncertainty. Malaysia’s position is clear: sovereignty must be respected, civilians protected and the arteries of the global economy kept out of the battlefield. BRICS must say plainly and unequivocally that occupation, settler colonialism and, more pointedly, “settler terrorism” cannot become destiny, and that no life weighs less for where it is lived. For Malaysia, strategic autonomy means the freedom to choose our own course and the courage to stand by that choice when it matters.
