Interview with His Excellency Josel F. Ignacio, Philippine Ambassador to India 9/10/2026
เฮ Itong brick summit na to is the fourth to be hosted by India. Ah nagsimula ang bricks nung 2006. So ngayon ang kanilang ikaw taon na 20th anniversary ng bricks. For this summit, yung kanilang tema, the team of this summit is uh resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability. I think the most significant for the Philippines the significance of uh of of this brick summit is that the president President Marcos is attending and uh on behalf of Asian uh as Asian chair and I think it's a recognition both of the stature of Asian and also of the Philippines. is invited as what they call an outreach outreach invities no outreach delegations and this includes the chairs of the of these respective regional organizations from Latin America, Africa, the Gulf countries and well bimstech is the Bay of Bengal as ASEAN chair and as outreach country President Marcos will attend the what they call the open session we expect the president to lay out uh the first the priorities of our Philippine chairmanship but also to highlight based on the team of this brick summit to Jacks uh and provide a picture of how Asian is uh addressing or thriving or progressing uh on these ano uh on these measures on these ano no uh goals and I think there's a lot of uh there's a lot uh that can be shared given ASEAN 60 year almost 60 year uh record track record and existence and there are lessons to be offered by ASEAN uh to breaks and all the attendees alike the priorities of the Philippine chairmanship which are uh you know security anchors prosperity corridors people empowerment but I think uh what what he will also communicate here is the is the openness of ASEAN to engaging other groupings no including bricks you know for ano no for practical cooperation purposes iyung visit na iun no is very much still you know alive in our memories no isang taon yung nakalilipas pero hanggang ngayon kami parang excited pa din dala pa din namin yung tuwa mula diyan sa pagdalo ni pangulo na yan kasi talaga namang napakamatagumpay at ah marami maraming ibinunga so in terms of concrete outcomes I think uh what's most important to highlight is that during that uh state visit of the president in August last year Philippines India relations were elevated to a strategic partnership and tayo tayo hindi tayo basta-basta pumapasok sa strategic partnerships no piling-pili yan. So we're ano we inaugurated we elevated our relationship with India and as ambassador I couldn't be happier na ano the two countries are in that you know higher state of uh more strategic level of engagement. We signed several agreements uh during that visit and uh I I I'm happy to report uh na on many of these agreements we've made rapid progress. For instance uh some of the agreements we signed involved the service to service uh talks among the branches of our armed forces since the visit of the president last year. talagang the the the frequency and number of delegations reciprocal no between the Philippines and India official and business talagang dumami napakadalas according to latest uh you know data that we're seeing mukhang papalapit na tayo sa 3.9 9 and almost 4 billion marks. So, and then on the tourism side uh we're we we're confident na we're almost able to recover pre-pandemic uh Indian tourism levels to the Philippines. So iyan, iyung mga healthy indicators are for us all signs na you know the president's visit and meeting with Prime Minister Modi in August uh revitalized the relationship and energize the relationship such that you know we're having so much gains and we hope that this will continue in the years to come. Prime Minister Modi and this uh coming break summit made a conscious effort to invite the regional blocks no uh Latin America and Caribbean Asian representing not just Southeast Asia but I think the bro you know this broad part of the our part of the Indo Pacific uh African Union GCC I think signals the desire of bricks uh to reach out and also to you know to maybe show the rest of the world what's it what it is doing and maybe to look for spaces uh for for collaboration uh among between and among these groupings. We're all concerned about food security, energy security, supply chain resilience. So itong mga bagay na to uh nakikita natin are important now to all these groupings and it's even more important that uh they work together uh you know to address these issues and hopefully may harmony uh among the initiatives that are being taken. when you look at the pillars of the bricks and of ASEAN uh you will note na halos pareho eh political security, economic and then people to people and uh and of course uh these especially sa bricks you know the the membership includes some of the most influential countries in the world no na including what we consider to be powers Russia, China ' ba Brazil and all these ano in the meantime Asian as a collective has a weight of its own we have what we call the convening power of Asian. We're able to bring together so many countries to the table to dialog on the uh most pressing issues of our time. Ngayon, Bricks is uh despite its 20 years, it's more loose than ASEAN. It's still evolving. But I think it it can play it can play a role. Pero importante talaga uh translating principles into practical action. We also would like to see consistency uh between the principles articulated and espoused and you know actions on the ground. The president's participation in the summit. It's a recognition of uh where ASEAN is now no what ASEAN has become its influence no in almost 60 years. It's really a tribute to Asian and what ASEAN has become and the lessons na nakikita ng bricks that maybe perhaps ASEAN can offer as well and perspectives. So natutuwa tayo na naanyayahan naanyayahan ng ASEAN habang tayo yung chair. So through discussions like this no bricks or ASEAN uh countries come together countries talk about issues exchange ideas and then maybe they even agree on you know certain courses of action and in the end uh these all uh redown to the benefit uh not just of the nation but down to the individual uh level and we hope to see that kind of impact maybe maybe you know not necessarily immediate But maybe over the long term makikita natin yung yung magandang kalalabasan yan at mararamdaman yan sa ano sa buhay din ng mga tao. So I think it's also a lesson in the importance of diplomacy. ครับ
