The Government has today launched its public consultation on the “National Strategic Risk Assessment 2026”.

The “National Risk Assessment 2024 – Overview of Strategic Risks” is being updated. To inform this process the public’s views are sought on what strategic risks are facing Ireland over the short, medium and long term.

Commenting on the launch of the consultation the Taoiseach Micheál Martin said:

“Protecting our country and people means being prepared for the risks we may face in the period ahead. The National Strategic Risk Assessment helps us to identify and understand these risks and to strengthen our preparedness.

"I encourage people and organisations across the country to take part in this public consultation. Their views will help us ensure that our approach reflects the risks and challenges facing Ireland today and into the future.”

For the consultation, stakeholders and members of the public are asked to assess whether the existing strategic risks, identified in 2024, accurately represent the major risks facing the country in 2026, whether there are any significant risks that should be added, or whether any of the existing risks should be revised or no longer warrant inclusion.

On conclusion of the public consultation, submissions will be reviewed and considered fully as part of the preparation of the "National Strategic Risk Assessment 2026".

The public consultation will be open until Friday 9 October 2026.

First published in 2014, the National Strategic Risk Assessment aims to provide a systematic overview of strategic risks facing the country to serve as the basis for political and public discussion and deliberation about their implications.

It provides an opportunity to identify and discuss significant risks that may arise for Ireland over the short, medium and long term.

Since its inception, it has previously identified, and discussed, at an early stage, significant strategic risks, such as the UK’s departure from the EU, pandemics, and disruption to global trading norms.

The most recent National Strategic Risk Assessment, covering 2024, was published in September 2024.
