Today we honour and remember all those who lost their lives during the September 11th attacks, a day of unspeakable horror that shook the world.

Of the 2,977 victims of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania, at least 18 were Irish citizens and an estimated 1,000 were of Irish heritage.

It was an attack on all humanity, on democracy and the values we all share.

It was particularity felt here in Ireland due to the close bonds between our two nations and peoples.

The victims included many of the first responders from the fire department and police who died while bravely rushing into danger to save others.

When I visited the 9/11 memorial in New York in 2021, I could not help but be struck by the number of Irish names that feature prominently among the dead.

The American people, including the Irish-American community, have shown tremendous resilience to rebuild their lives in the face of such inhumanity.

We see an example of this determination through the “Ride for Resilience” which will see firefighters from New York and Ireland cycle from Boston to Dublin to raise funds and awareness for mental health and wellness services.

We remain united with all the survivors of 9/11, both today and in the years to come.
