[applause] That boy Natanael who received the Zero Hunger card is now a lawyer married to another lawyer, and like many in this state, they have progressed. Piauí then wanted more, and you created it. We visited a school here in Teresina today, my dear Rafael, my dear Marcelo, my dear Júlio. The school you visited was highlighted by our Minister of Education, Baquin, who is here, and other ministers, as well as the importance of FUNDEB. I want to say and remind the people of Piauí here. This man first created the "fundebinho" (a small, informal fund), because Piauí didn't have time to lose; he wanted to implement high school education, which only existed in 45 municipalities in each state of Piauí. And the city that gives you the highest majority every time, out of all the cities in Brazil, is our beloved Guaribas, a symbol of the Zero Hunger program that you launched in the city of Guaribas. Mr. President, I created this city when I was still a state representative almost 40 years ago because it was the place in Piauí that I visited and saw was the most isolated, most abandoned, most remote, with immense poverty. And I realized that development would only reach that place if it were transformed into a city. But, Mr. President, we have a long history together. Throughout all stages of his political career. You counted on Marcelo Castro, federal deputy, senator. Recently, when you won the election, it was a coincidence; fate placed us in a position where I was in the right place at the right time. The previous government had put together a budget designed to harm him. There were no funds in the budget for the " My House, My Life" program. There were no funds for Bolsa Família (a social welfare program), no funds for the public pharmacy program, and no funds for school meals. And I, as rapporteur for the budget, Mr. President, created the transition amendment. I was the author of the transition amendment that provided resources so that you could govern the first year with the budget that I prepared. So, Mr. President, of everything you've done in your life, how would I rate it? His greatest achievement, his greatest work here on earth, was fighting the rampant hunger in Brazil. Ever since Cabral arrived here in Brazil, Mr. President, we have suffered from this scourge of seeing our children go hungry. The forces of backwardness, Mr. President, tripped up President Dilma, they staged a coup, and the consequence of that is that Brazil has returned to the hunger map. It took Your Excellency's return to the government of Brazil to once again remove Brazil from the hunger map. Today, Brazil is no longer on the hunger map. This is the greatest work, the greatest achievement of our President Lula, which he has done for our people. Mr. President, we have been with you through thick and thin , [applause] in the easy times and the difficult times. [applause] The true friend of a president is the one we say here in Piauí is not a companion halfway through the journey, not a companion from beginning to end. A man of humble origins, he left Pernambuco in a truck, went to São Paulo, had a very difficult life, then became a metalworker, a union leader, and became President of the Republic. Today, in his third term, for the good he does for the Brazilian people, especially those who were excluded in the past, and he managed to include them in what citizens need most, to take them off the map of hunger. How many programs, Mr. President, have you created in Brazil to eliminate poverty and improve the lives of every man and woman? How many people participate in the Bolsa Família program in Brazil? And above all, we women want to live without fear, without fear of being victims of misogyny, violence and femicide. This is the Brazil that President Lula built and rebuilt. The first time, I wouldn't have been born. It was merely the embryo that Fonter was trying to bring into the world. But I came here to found the PT. I remember we rented an old bus. There were two people with us who I miss very much. Comrade Luiz Edig, founder of the PT (Workers' Party), and comrade Ribamar, two founding members of the PT, two comrades in the social struggle. I don't know where the trinity sat with us, our beloved trinity that died prematurely. But I know there were eight, I know Antônio José was there, I know your father, Fontelo, was there. Well, I wanted to tell you something that touches me deeply. [applause] When I left São Paulo in 1952, when I left Pernambuco in 1952 to go to São Paulo, we went to look for my father. My father had left in 1945. He had gotten my mother pregnant with me, and my father had already been gone for almost 7 years. And my mother decided to go to São Paulo to look for her beloved husband who was sending her help. And what a surprise it was! When we arrived in São Paulo, my mother, with eight young children, found my father with another woman. [scream] My father had married my mother's cousin without my mother knowing. Now imagine what it's like for a woman from the Northeast of Brazil who left Caités to avoid starving to death in search of her beloved in São Paulo, only to arrive there and find him with another woman. My mother had no doubt. She left my father. And she raised eight children on her own. Alone. She never wanted to live with another man again and never spoke to my father again. I'm saying this because I carry in my DNA the things I learned from my mother. And my mother always said: "My son, never bow your head to anyone, because if you bow your head, they'll put a yoke around your neck and you'll never raise your head again. We may be poor, but we have to be proud of who we are. And we are no worse than anyone else. We just want to be equal." This upbringing I received from my mother makes me always say in my speeches: "If someone wants to govern Brazil well, they have to govern like a mother governs her family, because there is nothing more just on the face of the earth." There is nothing more loyal than a mother to her children. A mother would die for her children. For the sake of their children, mothers kill. A mother will go through anything for her children, but she wants to protect them. And when we're in government, when we have doubts, we have to put ourselves in the place of a mother and think about how she would manage to care for a family of 217 million children, which is what Brazil has. And that's why I made a lifelong commitment. I occasionally meet someone, Rafael, who is younger than me, but more frail than I am. Sometimes I'd see someone 10 years younger than me walking with their legs dragging. I'm not ashamed of being 80 years old. I am proud to be 80 years old. And I tell everyone, it's not the years that age a person. What ages a person is a lack of cause to fight for, a lack of motivation to live. And that's why every day I wake up with the same determination to defend these people so that they can live with dignity, with quality education, food on the table, quality jobs, and a decent salary. That's why I'm proud. I've never been ashamed to say that the flag of my Brazil is green and yellow, but the flag of my Workers' Party (PT) is red with a white star. And I am very proud of it, very proud of my flag. Those who only carry the Brazilian flag and go to rallies with American flags are mongrels, they are traitors to the homeland who have no commitment to this country. And I know that for centuries and centuries the Brazilian elite didn't care about the poor people. Education was never taken seriously in this country before we came to power. I always say, Rafael, the first university in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, which was discovered in 1492, was created 40 years after the discovery. Our first university was only created 420 years after Cabral arrived here. Because the Brazilian elite of that time did not want to educate the indigenous people. Indigenous people were made to work for them, and for 350 years they didn't want to educate the slaves who only came here to work. That's why they didn't care, because their children would go to study in Europe or the United States, and the poor had to die cutting sugarcane, stamping it, or mining for them. Piauí is a state that makes this country proud, proving that it can be the best in education and the best in development. which is not a mistake to show this dear Indian of mine, the smartest guy I've ever met in Brazil, the guy who tricked me every time he went to Brasília asking for money for Piauí, and I never let him leave Plonaldo's Palace empty-handed [applause] from my colleague Regina. Regina is short, just the way she is. I wanted to tell you all, all girls and all women should be proud of Regina's character. This short woman who spoke here, who was an alternate representative and then assumed the governorship, is a source of pride for Brazilian women because she demonstrates that courage and character don't depend on gender or size. Do you know what the inflation rate was for the last four years of our government? 13.6%. Do you know how many minimum wage increases there were in the previous government? None. Do you know how much our government spent every year? Do you know how many times retirees have received a real increase in wages? none in our entire year. It's important for us to know these things, because what's at stake in this year's election isn't whether it will be Rafael or Lula, it's whether there will be democracy or not, it's whether the Brazilian people will be respected or not.
