President Lai Ching-te attended the unveiling ceremony of the Tainan Station "Continuing the Centenary Station and Opening up Tainan's Future" on the evening of the 10th. He said that Tainan Railway Station has gone through 126 years and now the underground railway project has been completed. He thanked all Tainan citizens for their support and the residents who were demolished along the railway line. In the future, we will build a 30-meter-wide green parkway, continue to promote the undergrounding of Yongkang Railway, the three-dimensional project of the new city and Shanhua area, and the construction of Tainan light rail and MRT road networks. We hope that the central and city government teams will work together to continue to promote various transportation constructions and make Tainan City's transportation more complete.
After the president arrived, he first listened to Director Yang Zhengjun of the Railway Bureau of the Ministry of Transport explain the station and station nameplate design. Later, in his speech, he said that today he returned to Tainan with a grateful heart to host the unveiling ceremony of Tainan Station. Tainan Railway Station has gone through 126 years and is a very important gateway for citizens to enter and exit. Railway transportation also brings progress, prosperity and economic development to the city. However, after more than 100 years, it has also caused many restrictions and obstacles, including dividing the city into two, and level crossings affecting transportation convenience, and many accidents have occurred. Therefore, Tainan citizens have been looking forward to the underground railway for decades.
The president pointed out that after the central government approved the plan, he served as the mayor of Tainan and was responsible for implementing related work. The project has now been completed and is expected to be opened to traffic on October 18. First of all, he would like to thank all Tainan citizens for their strong support, and especially thank the residents along the railway line for their support. Some of his good friends are very opposed to the demolition and have joined the fight. He could understand the other party's mood, because the house was built by a gentleman who was an architect, and it carried the emotions between the couple and the whole family. As the project continued and the houses were being demolished, he kept thinking of these residents, communicating with them face to face and listening to their stories. Therefore, he also wanted to express his apology to the residents who opposed the demolition at that time and thank everyone for their support.
The President also thanked the Executive Yuan, the Railway Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation, including the then Director Wu Shengyuan, the current Director Yang Zhengjun, and all colleagues for their hard work in this railway construction. At the same time, I would also like to thank the Tainan City Government team. Whether it was during his tenure as mayor or Mayor Huang Weizhe, they have worked very hard over the years, and there are tasks that need to be faced at every stage. In addition, there is the support of Tainan City Council members regardless of party affiliation, as well as the unreserved support of the budget from the central government’s legislators.
The president said that when people's houses were demolished, he listened to the public's objections one by one. Some of them also mentioned that they were worried about not having a house to live in. Therefore, the city government searched for land in the East District and launched a public bidding. Fuli Construction won the bid to build care homes. After the residents moved in, he visited and the people were generally satisfied and thought that the situation was different from their original worries. He would also like to take this opportunity to thank Fuli Construction and the residents who were willing to stand up and express their support during the process and believed that Tainan should see changes. Therefore, he returned to Tainan today with a grateful heart to preside over the unveiling ceremony of the train station.
The President said that when the railway undergrounding plan was initially promoted, residents mistakenly believed that after the houses were demolished, the original land would be used for development. Now it has been proven that the original land was used for the Green Parkway. Talking about the follow-up construction, the president said that, first, in the future, the 30-meter-wide greenway will be subsidized by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, so that this greenway will become a vertical park for Tainan citizens, where people can ride bicycles and take walks. In the future, it will also be lined with trees and become another leisure place in Tainan City. Second, I hope that the future mayor can continue to promote the undergroundization of Yongkang Railway and the three-dimensional project of the new city and Shanhua area. Many members are present today. I hope that the future mayor and council can continue to support and promote this major construction.
The president further pointed out that in the future, after Yongkang is undergrounded and Xinshi is elevated, Tainan Railway will play another important role. Now Tainan City is also promoting light rail and MRT projects. Tainan is the cultural capital of Taiwan and a municipality directly under the Central Government. It should have its own light rail or MRT system in the future. When he was the mayor of Tainan when planning, he regarded the Tainan Railway as a vertical backbone from north to south. In the past, there were too many railways and level crossings along the line. With the underground railway, the trains will be more dense and punctual in the future. It will also be able to connect the Green Line, Blue Line, and Red Line currently planned in Tainan City, and the road network that will be expanded to the north of Tsengwen Creek in the future. It will be promoted step by step through overall planning.
The President hopes that in the future, the central and city government teams will work together, and with the support of legislators and city councilors, continue to promote various transportation constructions to make Tainan City's transportation more complete.
Subsequently, the president held the unveiling and inheritance ceremony together with the distinguished guests, and inspected the station hall, central control room, platform, etc. to gain an on-site understanding of the various facilities and services of Tainan Station.
Including Transportation Minister Chen Shikai, Tainan Mayor Huang Weizhe, legislators Chen Tingfei, Lin Junxian, Wang Dingyu, Xu Zhongxin, Lin Yijin, Xie Longjie, etc. also attended the event.
