Santo Domingo.- The director of the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transportation (Intrant), Juan Manuel Méndez, held a meeting with the president of the Dominican National Transportation Federation (Fenatrado), Ricardo de los Santos, and members of its board of directors, in which they evaluated alternatives to enable the transit of heavy vehicles, strengthen road safety and guarantee compliance with the law.

The meeting is part of the rapprochement agenda that Méndez develops with the different actors linked to transit and land transportation, with the purpose of strengthening institutional coordination and contributing to the provision of quality services to users, under safety criteria and adherence to current regulations.

“In the coming days, agreements could be announced between different institutions that would entail some improvements with respect to heavy vehicles,” said Méndez.

The meeting was defined as very cordial and fruitful by both parties, who agreed on the importance of maintaining permanent communication to address the main challenges of cargo transportation and road safety.

De los Santos highlighted Méndez's professional career and stated that his history of service to the country constitutes a guarantee for the performance of the functions conferred on him by President Luis Abinader.

"We understand that General Méndez has demonstrated, in every responsibility he has assumed, management capacity and institutional commitment. We trust that, at the head of Intrant, he will carry out work in line with the country's expectations," said the president of Fenatrado.

Describing him as a dedicated public servant, De los Santos added that “in all the spaces where he has been responsible for leading, General Méndez has done a job worthy of the circumstances.”

Director of Intrant is committed to dialogue and compliance with the law

For his part, the director of Intrant stated that his management will be based on dialogue, transparency and strict adherence to the law.

The official assured that he will keep the doors of the institution open to the different sectors linked to transit and transportation in the Dominican Republic, considering that decisions must be the result of coordination and exchange with the actors involved.

"The president appointed me to listen, talk and make decisions. Decisions cannot be made unilaterally," said Méndez.

Likewise, he highlighted the contribution of freight transportation to national economic development and recognized the role of drivers in the merchandise distribution chain.

Méndez emphasized that his management will not have the purpose of “running over or mistreating,” but rather managing traffic through planning, coordination and respect for current regulations.

The meeting between the Fenatrado board and the Intrant authorities is part of the institution's efforts to strengthen communication and coordination with the actors of the land transportation system, with a view to promoting solutions that contribute to safer and more efficient mobility in the country.
