Those who opposed this project were people who had cold water in their fridge. They were people who didn't know what it was like to carry a water jug on their neck, a tin of water on their head. I am proud because I know the importance of water. I used to go to the reservoir to get water. I would fetch muddy water. I was 7 years old when my mother took her eight children and left for São Paulo to survive the drought. When I assumed the presidency of the Republic, I decided it wasn't right for part of Brazilian society to die of hunger and thirst because they lacked water.
