Damascus, Sep. 9 ( SANA)The Syrian Arab Republic welcomes a decision adopted unanimously by the Board of Governors of theInternational Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) to close the outstanding issues related to Syria’s nuclear file and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty safeguards agreement, and to remove the related matters from the Board’s agenda.

This closes a chapter that had remained open for years and opens new prospects for Syria to engage in international cooperation on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and nuclear technologies.

TheMinistry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriatessaid in a statement that Syria affirms that the decision represents an important diplomatic and legal achievement for Syria, reflecting its success in building consensus within the IAEA Board of Governors and continuing the approach pursued by Syrian diplomacy since liberation in multilateral forums.

Since liberation, the Syrian Arab Republic has taken a courageous sovereign decision to address the legacy left behind by the ousted Assad regime with national responsibility, embracing transparency and cooperation and respecting international obligations as a consistent approach, in clear contrast to the policies of concealment, denial and evasion.

Based on this decision, Syria took the initiative to provide the relevant information and disclose sites and materials that had not previously been declared, while enabling IAEA teams to gain access and carry out verification activities in accordance with the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and the Agency’s established procedures. In doing so, Syria placed the handling of this legacy within the framework of international law and under the IAEA’s safeguards and verification mechanisms, thereby building confidence through practical and responsible steps.

The Foreign Ministry extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to all countries that stood by Syria and supported this path, as well as to the IAEA Director General and the safeguards team for their cooperation and professional efforts. The Ministry views the adoption of the resolution by consensus as a shared success for Syria, the agency and its member states, and as an affirmation of the value of dialogue, cooperation and institutional work.

The Syrian Arab Republic looks forward to a new phase of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, based on a long-term institutional partnership. It reaffirms its right to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and technology in accordance with its international obligations, as well as its determination to develop such applications in cooperation with the Agency and member states in the fields of health, agriculture, food security, electricity generation and other applications, in support of sustainable national development and comprehensive prosperity.
