Syrian Atomic Energy Commission patents device for cancer treatment research
Damascus, Sept. 9 (SANA)A research team at theSyrian Atomic Energy Commissionhas secured a patent for a locally developed light irradiation device designed for research into photodynamic therapy for cancer cells, the commission said Tuesday.
The device can deliver different wavelengths and radiation doses, providing Syrian researchers with a locally manufactured tool for studying photodynamic therapy (PDT), a technique that uses light-sensitive compounds activated by specific wavelengths of light.The commission’s media office told SANA that the research team comprised Dr. Thaer Asaad, Dr. Razan al-Zeibak and Dr. Ahmad Fayoumi, who developed and manufactured the device entirely at the commission’s laboratories.
The researchers used reverse engineering to develop the first device of its kind in Syria.
The system uses LED light sources in red, green and yellow wavelengths and is designed to provide uniform, high-precision illumination compatible with 96-well cell culture plates. Its controlled output allows researchers to apply specified light doses to targeted cells using standardized photosensitizing compounds.
The commission said laboratory in vitro testing demonstrated the device’s biological effectiveness and efficiency for cancer-related research in accordance with internationally recognized standards.
The commission described the patent as a significant development for medical and scientific research in Syria, providing researchers with locally developed technology for cancer studies while reducing reliance on complex and costly imported equipment.
It said the device could help expand Syrian research into photodynamic therapy and support the development of new therapeutic compounds and preparations for tumors.
The innovation also supports efforts to localize advanced technology and develop domestic scientific solutions to medical challenges, the commission added.
The Syrian Atomic Energy Commission was established in 1976 and began institutional operations in 1981 as the government body responsible for atomic energy and its peaceful applications in Syria.
