The Ministry of Youth Development and Sports (JOS) has started the national school package project. Within this program, a total of 25,000 school bags with school supplies are distributed to school-age young people from socially weak families. The official launch took place on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 on O.S. Latour 1, where some of the school packages were handed over. With the project, the government wants to support families who are less financially capable.
The idea behind this is that no child should be left behind due to financial circumstances and that every child should have the opportunity to go to school. The start was preceded by a preparation process and an online registration. A different approach was chosen for the interior. In collaboration with administrative supervisors and district commissioners, we identified which families need support.
Farcia Wongsokarijo, deputy director of General Education (AVO), said in her speech that education is an important basis for the development of children and young people and therefore also for the future of Suriname. According to Wongsokarijo, in order for students to start their school career with motivation, the necessary resources must be available. The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture therefore supports the JOS initiative.
"By providing 25,000 school kits, we are easing the financial burden on parents and guardians. The contents of the bag may seem like simple items, but for a student, these resources can make a big difference. It gives them a sense of preparation and that they can start the school year with confidence," said Wongsokarijo. She also called on the young people to commit themselves and believe in themselves.
Parliamentarian Michael Marengo, member of the standing committee for JOS, stated that the project involves more than just providing a school bag. According to him, it is an important message to do their best and obtain their diploma or transition report at the end of the school year. In addition, the representative appealed to the relevant committee and executive bodies to ensure that the school bags actually reach the children who need them.
Margo Biervliet, acting director of Youth Development, emphasized that the project must make a concrete contribution to the development and future of children. According to her, no child should miss a school year due to a lack of financial resources. “That is why we are committed to equal opportunities, youth participation and strengthening the position of young people.” According to her, the implementation of the project was made possible by the efforts of various partners such as ministries, schools, neighborhood and youth organizations, the working group, administrative services, district commissioners and the media.

Binnen dit programma worden in totaal 25.000 schooltassen met schoolbenodigdheden uitgedeeld aan schoolgaande jongeren uit sociaal zwakke gezinnen. De officiële lancering vond plaats op dinsdag 8 september 2026 op O.S. Latour 1, waar een deel van de schoolpakketten werd overhandigd. Met het project wil de regering gezinnen die financieel minder draagkrachtig zijn, ondersteunen. De gedachte hierachter is dat geen enkel kind vanwege financiële omstandigheden achtergelaten mag worden en dat ieder kind de mogelijkheid moet hebben om naar school te gaan. Aan de start is een voorbereidingstraject voorafgegaan alsook een online registratie. Voor het binnenland was gekozen voor een andere aanpak. Daar is in samenwerking met bestuursopzichters en districtscommissariaten in kaart gebracht welke gezinnen ondersteuning nodig hebben. Farcia Wongsokarijo, onderdirecteur Algemeen Vormend Onderwijs (AVO), zei in haar toespraak dat onderwijs een belangrijke basis vormt voor de ontwikkeling van kinderen en jongeren en daarmee ook voor de toekomst van Suriname. Om leerlingen hun schoolloopbaan gemotiveerd te laten starten, moeten volgens Wongsokarijo de nodige middelen beschikbaar zijn. Het ministerie van Onderwijs, Wetenschap en Cultuur ondersteunt daarom het initiatief van JOS. “Met het beschikbaar stellen van 25.000 schoolpakketten verlichten we de financiële lasten van ouders en verzorgers. De inhoud van de tas lijkt misschien uit eenvoudige zaken te bestaan, maar voor een leerling kunnen deze middelen een groot verschil maken. Het geeft ze een gevoel van voorbereiding en dat ze met vertrouwen het schooljaar kunnen beginnen”, stelde Wongsokarijo. Zij riep de jongeren daarnaast op zich in te zetten en in zichzelf te geloven. Parlementariër Michael Marengo, lid van de vaste commissie voor JOS, stelde dat het project meer omvat dan alleen het verstrekken van een schooltas. Het is volgens hem een belangrijke boodschap om hun best te doen en aan het eind van het schooljaar hun diploma of overgangsrapport te behalen. Daarnaast deed de volksvertegenwoordiger een beroep op de betrokken commissie en uitvoerende instanties om ervoor te zorgen dat de schooltassen daadwerkelijk terechtkomen bij de kinderen die het nodig hebben. Margo Biervliet, waarnemend directeur Jeugdontwikkeling, benadrukte dat het project een concrete bijdrage moet leveren aan de ontwikkeling en toekomst van kinderen.
