After an intensive training of approximately four and a half months, twenty soldiers have successfully completed the Group Commander Course 2026-01 at the Institute for Defense Training (IDO). During the training, the emphasis was on developing leadership skills, discipline and correctly managing troops. The students are thus prepared for their responsibilities as group commander within the defense organization. Captain Dyoma Blokland, commander of the Military School (MS), explained that the theoretical part consisted of various modules that focused on the knowledge and skills that a sergeant needs to adequately perform his or her duties. The practical part consisted of a field service, where the theoretical knowledge acquired was applied and tested in practice. She emphasized that the knowledge and skills acquired during the course should not be lost. “Take them with you and promote them within your work,” says Captain Blokland.
According to Colonel Justus Hew A Kee, commander of the IDO, the group commander fulfills a crucial role within the organization. He emphasized that the students had not started the training without experience. According to him, they brought with them a dose of experience, built up over their years of employment. What they still lacked was the theory. The training enabled them to combine their extensive practical experience with the necessary theoretical knowledge.
"As a group commander, you are the link between senior leadership and implementation. You are the point of contact in crisis situations, the calm voice when there is a storm and the one who monitors the course when the pressure is highest. That requires courage. Not just physical courage, but especially moral courage: the courage to make choices, take responsibility for your mistakes and stand up for your people," said the IDO commander.
Colonel Hew A Kee further indicated that group commanders must take strict action where necessary, but must always act fairly. He also called on them to take care of the people entrusted to them. According to him, leadership is not about power, rank or simply handing out orders. It is about influence, exemplary behavior and creating an atmosphere in which everyone can rely on each other blindly.

Tijdens de opleiding lag de nadruk op het ontwikkelen van leiderschapsvaardigheden, discipline en het op correcte wijze aansturen van manschappen. De cursisten zijn hiermee voorbereid op hun verantwoordelijkheden als groepscommandant binnen de defensieorganisatie. Kapitein Dyoma Blokland, commandant van de Militaire School (MS), lichtte toe dat het theoretische gedeelte bestond uit verschillende modules die gericht waren op de kennis en vaardigheden die een sergeant nodig heeft om zijn of haar werkzaamheden op een adequate wijze uit te voeren. Het praktische gedeelte bestond uit een velddienst, waarbij de opgedane theoretische kennis in de praktijk werd toegepast en getoetst. Zij benadrukte daarbij dat de kennis en vaardigheden die tijdens de cursus zijn opgedaan, niet verloren mogen gaan. “Neem ze mee en draag ze uit binnen uw werkzaamheden”, aldus kapitein Blokland. Volgens kolonel Justus Hew A Kee, commandant van het IDO, vervult de groepscommandant een cruciale rol binnen de organisatie. Hij benadrukte dat de cursisten niet zonder ervaring aan de opleiding waren begonnen. Volgens hem brachten zij een dosis aan ervaring mee, opgebouwd gedurende hun jarenlange dienstverband. Wat hen nog ontbrak, was de theorie. Met de opleiding hebben zij hun ruime praktijkervaring kunnen verbinden aan de nodige theoretische kennis. “Als groepscommandant ben je de spil tussen de hogere leiding en de uitvoering. Je bent het aanspreekpunt in crisissituaties, de rustige stem wanneer het stormt en degene die de koers bewaakt wanneer de druk het hoogst is. Dat vraagt om moed. Niet alleen fysieke moed, maar vooral morele moed: de moed om keuzes te maken, verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor je fouten en op te komen voor je mensen”, zei de IDO-commandant. Kolonel Hew A Kee gaf verder aan dat groepscommandanten streng moeten optreden waar dat nodig is, maar daarbij altijd rechtvaardig dienen te handelen. Daarnaast riep hij hen op om zorg te dragen voor de mensen die aan hun zijn toevertrouwd. Volgens hem gaat leiderschap niet over macht, rang of het simpelweg uitdelen van bevelen. Het gaat over invloed, voorbeeldgedrag en het creëren van een sfeer waarin iedereen blind op elkaar kan bouwen.
