Minister Bee: “Ambtenaren beschikken eind september over 15% loonsverhoging”
Civil servants and employees equivalent to them will receive a total salary increase of 15% at the end of September. Minister Marinus Bee of the Interior confirmed this to the Communications Service Suriname (CDS) on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The minister, as a representative of the government, denies information from union leader Michael Miskin who allegedly indicated to the media that civil servants will receive a 10% pay increase at the end of September and then the remaining 5% will be paid in October.
However, Minister Bee emphasizes that in accordance with the agreements with the unions and the process to achieve a pay increase, civil servants will be awarded the 15% pay increase at the end of September. “There is no discussion in that regard,” said the minister. He confirms that the council's proposal for the wage increase has already been approved within the Council of Ministers. "I signed the missive myself today. The Minister of Finance has signed everything. We are ready to implement. So the story that we will first pay out 10% and then 5% is not correct," Bee clarifies.
The minister confirms that a proposal was made during the negotiations to split the present pay increase into two parts. “But ultimately, what we have definitively agreed on is that we will award that 15% at the end of September,” said Minister Bee. According to the minister, the result achieved is not a final agreement or agreement. “We will continue to negotiate,” he continues.
It is intended that a technical committee will be set up for further negotiations, consisting of representatives of the government and trade unions. The representatives from the government are already known; we now have to wait for the nominations from the unions. The committee will then work to come up with additional proposals within three months. “So that we can go to final negotiation and closure of this section,” the government official said.
Minister Bee further emphasizes that the current purchasing power increase of SRD 1,500 remains in force as agreed. “We know our responsibility as a government and we will do everything we can to improve the purchasing power of working people, civil servants and their equivalents,” the minister said. According to him, opportunities have been created. “So we appeal to the people to trust what we have presented to them,” Minister Bee said.

Minister Bee benadrukt echter dat conform de afspraken met de bonden en het traject om te komen tot een loonsverhoging, de ambtenaren eind september de loonsverhoging van 15% toegekend zullen krijgen. “Er is geen discussie wat dat betreft”, aldus de bewindsman. Hij bevestigt dat het raadsvoorstel voor de loonsverhoging al binnen de Raad van Ministers is goedgekeurd. “Ik heb zelf de missive getekend vandaag. De minister van Financiën heeft alles getekend. We zijn ready om tot uitvoering te gaan. Dus het verhaal dat we eerst 10% gaan uitbetalen en daarna 5% klopt niet”, verduidelijkt Bee. De bewindsman bevestigt dat er tijdens de onderhandeling een voorstel is gedaan om de onderhavige loonsverhoging in twee delen op te splitsen. “Maar uiteindelijk, wat we definitief hebben afgesproken, is dat we eind september die 15% gaan toekennen”, aldus minister Bee. Volgens de bewindsman is het bereikte resultaat geen definitieve overeenstemming of overeenkomst. “We gaan door onderhandelen”, gaat hij verder. Het is de bedoeling dat voor de verdere onderhandelingen een technische commissie zal worden samengesteld, bestaande uit vertegenwoordigers van de regering en vakbonden. De vertegenwoordigers vanuit de regering zijn reeds bekend; het wachten is nu op de voordrachten vanuit de vakbonden. De commissie zal vervolgens aan de slag gaan om binnen drie maanden met additionele voorstellen te komen. “Zodat we kunnen gaan tot definitieve onderhandeling en afsluiting van dit gedeelte”, aldus de regeringsfunctionaris. Minister Bee benadrukt verder dat de huidige koopkrachtversterking van SRD 1500,- conform afspraak van kracht blijft. “We kennen onze verantwoordelijkheid als regering en we zullen alles in het werk stellen om de koopkracht van de werkende mensen, de ambtenaren en aan hen gelijkgestelden te verbeteren”, zegt de bewindsman. Volgens hem zijn er mogelijkheden gecreëerd. “Dus we doen een beroep op de mensen om te vertrouwen op datgene wat we hebben gepresenteerd aan hen”, aldus minister Bee.
