President Jennifer Simons emphasized unity and brotherhood at the national symposium One Heritage Policy 2026 - with the theme 'From shared history to sustainable heritage policy'. In the Royal Ballroom of Hotel Torarica, the head of state started her speech on Wednesday, August 19, with a portion of the poem by the Surinamese poet Shrinivási (Martinus Lutchman). “I would like to bind you together as one people, without it remaining a fairy tale, because in words we are Surinamese, but in deed we are still not always completely,” said the president, who gave a small variation to the final part.
According to President Simons, the message in the poem is actually the entire core of what Heritage Month is all about. The purpose of Heritage Month, she says, is to raise awareness of all these aspects of each other's history. The head of state considers knowing and engaging with each other as the basis for unity. She therefore thought it was important that various actors, including the country's leadership, came together to discuss not only about the Surinamese heritage, "but also about our future."
The president also praised Surinamese writer Cynthia McLeod for her many years of dedication to recording the history of Suriname. The historian received special appreciation for her work during the symposium from the presidential working group Heritage Month through a 'Wi Gudu-Our Heritage' recognition. She was also presented with regalia by President Simons and Rachel Pinas as chair of the presidential working group Heritage Month 2026.
National and diversityHeritage Month is not an ad hoc affair, according to President Simons. She eventually sees an expansion of the Heritage Month celebration, with possible participation of foreigners. The head of state emphasized that diversity in a country is not the same as active coexistence. For a country like Suriname with such a great diversity of groups, cultures and origins, a number of things are very important to form unity. According to the president, freedom of religion and culture can also be regarded as a great example for the world.
Despite its colonial past, President Simons states that Suriname has done well so far. "We have achieved together that we all feel Surinamese and that we respect others. But where we stand today is a certain point. We must ensure that we also have a future together," the head of state emphasized. She pointed out the number of multi-ethnic societies in the world where external influences have caused disruption. According to her, multi-ethnic societies are rich. “We have a society for our children in which they grow up with so many different cultures of the world and that is a wealth.”
However, the head of state warned that the above-mentioned wealth is also vulnerable. Heritage Month is therefore a good initiative to bring different population groups together, whereby their origins are recognised, acknowledged, valued and respected. “This will help us to ensure that this unity not only continues to grow, but is strong enough to withstand all the waves that the world can throw at us,” said President Simons.

In de Royal Ballroom van Hotel Torarica begon het staatshoofd op woensdag 19 augustus haar toespraak met een gedeelte uit het gedicht van de Surinaamse dichter Shrinivási (Martinus Lutchman). “Ik zou jullie willen binden tot een volk, zonder dat het een sprookje blijft, want in woord zijn we Surinamer, maar in daad nog steeds niet altijd helemaal”, aldus de president, die een kleine variatie gaf aan het slotdeel. Volgens president Simons is de boodschap in het gedicht eigenlijk de hele kern waar de Heritage Month om draait. Het doel van Heritage Month is, naar haar zeggen, om het bewustzijn van al deze aspecten van elkaars geschiedenis in te zetten. Het kennen van én bezig zijn met elkaar beschouwt het staatshoofd als basis voor de eenheid. Zij vond het daarom belangrijk dat verschillende actoren, waaronder ook de leiding van het land, bijeenkwamen om niet alleen te praten over de Surinaamse heritage, “maar ook over onze toekomst.” De president prees ook de Surinaamse schrijfster Cynthia McLeod voor haar jarenlange inzet om de geschiedenis van Suriname vast te leggen. De geschiedschrijfster kreeg tijdens het symposium voor haar werk daarom ook een speciale waardering van de presidentiële werkgroep Heritage Month middels een ‘Wi Gudu-Ons Erfgoed’ erkenning. Verder kreeg zij een regalia omhangen door president Simons en Rachel Pinas als voorzitter van de presidentiële werkgroep Heritage Month 2026. Nationaal en diversiteitHeritage Month is volgens president Simons geen ad-hoczaak. Zij ziet op termijn een uitbreiding van de Heritage Month-viering, met mogelijke deelname van buitenlanders. Het staatshoofd benadrukte dat diversiteit in een land niet hetzelfde is als actief samenleven. Voor een land als Suriname met een dergelijke grote diversiteit van groepen, culturen en afkomst zijn een aantal zaken van groot belang om een eenheid te vormen. Ook de vrijheid van religie en cultuur mag volgens de president worden beschouwd als een groot voorbeeld voor de wereld. Ondanks het koloniale verleden stelt president Simons dat Suriname het tot nu toe goed heeft gedaan. “We hebben met elkaar bereikt dat we ons allemaal Surinamers voelen en dat wij de ander respecteren. Maar waar wij vandaag staan, is een bepaald punt. We moeten ervoor zorgen dat we ook samen een toekomst hebben”, benadrukte het staatshoofd. Zij wees op het aantal multi-etnische samenlevingen in de wereld, waar invloeden van buitenaf verstoring hebben gebracht. Volgens haar zijn multi-etnische samenlevingen rijk. “Wij hebben voor onze kinderen een samenleving waarin ze opgroeien met zoveel verschillende culturen van de wereld en dat is een rijkdom.” Het staatshoofd waarschuwde echter ervoor dat bovengenoemde rijkdom ook kwetsbaar is. Heritage Month is daarom een goed initiatief om de verschillende bevolkingsgroepen samen te brengen, waarbij de afkomst wordt herkend, erkend, gewaardeerd en gerespecteerd. “Dat zal ons helpen om ook voor de toekomst ervoor te zorgen dat die eenheid niet alleen steeds groter wordt, maar sterk genoeg is om alle golven te weerstaan die de wereld op ons kan gooien”, aldus president Simons. © 2026 GOV.SR |Privacy Policy|Cookie Policy
