Antofagasta, August 19, 2026.-The President of the Republic, José Antonio Kast, traveled this Wednesday to the Antofagasta Region to lead the Government's coordination on the ground in the face of the consequences of the frontal system that has affected different localities in the area and that led to the decree of a State of Constitutional Exception of Catastrophe. After arriving at the Antofagasta Air Base, the Head of State addressed the Presidential Delegation Regional, where he headed an extensive technical table together with political authorities, representatives of emergency organizations, Armed and Law Enforcement Forces and public services, as well as communal authorities who participated remotely. “We have been able to have a regional working table, together with the highest local authorities, the regional governor, the regional delegate, the mayor of Antofagasta who accompanied us, the director of SENAPRED,” said President Kast. He added that the mayors of different communes connected virtually, including representatives of Taltal and Mejillones, some of the areas most affected by the meteorological event. The President also valued the transversal deployment of the region's parliamentarians. “I also appreciate the participation of the parliamentarians, who all, without any distinction, the senators and the deputies, were reporting and were deployed or permanently connected to the different areas,” he stated. During the meeting, the situation in Tocopilla was especially reviewed, a province where the Chief of National Defense, Brigadier General Eduardo Cuadra, is already deployed. Likewise, the state of the routes, the health infrastructure and the operation of the shelters were analyzed. Regarding connectivity, the President reported that access has been gradually recovered. "There is already an open route to Tocopilla. Work continues on two more routes. We have had the collaboration of the private company, which together with the MOP Road machinery, has been enabling each of these accesses," he explained. The Head of State also pointed out that the health infrastructure is, in general terms, operational, although with a greater impact in Tocopilla, and highlighted that the shelters have made it possible to care for affected people both in that commune and in Antofagasta. Along with facing the contingency, President Kast raised the need to learn lessons to strengthen the region's preparation for future events. "We can learn from these tragedies going forward. There are many situations that can be projected to have a master plan, for example, in rainwater situations," he said. Along these lines, the President also addressed the need to advance definitive housing solutions and avoid settlements in sectors exposed to natural threats. “We have to work to ensure that people who have settled in high-risk areas have to leave those areas,” he said, adding that the challenge requires decisively facing urban planning and projecting regional growth considering the availability of public land and the prospects for mining investment. Participating authorities The coordination table included, among other authorities, the regional presidential delegate of Antofagasta, Katherine López; Senator Pedro Araya; and the deputies Fabián Ossandón, Jaime Araya, Sebastián Videla and Carlo Arquero. Also present were the regional governor of Antofagasta; representatives of SENAPRED; sectoral seremias; Carabineros, Investigative Police and Firefighters; military authorities and representatives of services linked to infrastructure, security and emergency response. From the Central Government, authorities of Social Development, the Undersecretary of Regional Development, the Interior and the National Directorate of Public Works accompanied the President. Provincial and communal authorities of the region joined the instance remotely, allowing the consolidation of information on the affected areas and the coordination of measures aimed at recovering connectivity, caring for affected families and normalizing essential services.

Antofagasta, 19 de agosto de 2026.-El Presidente de la República, José Antonio Kast, se trasladó este miércoles a la Región de Antofagasta para encabezar en terreno la coordinación del Gobierno frente a las consecuencias del sistema frontal que ha afectado a distintas localidades de la zona y que llevó a decretar Estado de Excepción Constitucional de Catástrofe.Tras arribar a la Base Aérea de Antofagasta, el Jefe de Estado se dirigió a la Delegación Presidencial Regional, donde encabezó una extensa mesa técnica junto a autoridades políticas, representantes de organismos de emergencia, Fuerzas Armadas y de Orden y servicios públicos, además de autoridades comunales que participaron de manera remota.“Hemos podido tener una mesa de trabajo regional, junto con las máximas autoridades locales, el gobernador regional, la delegada regional, el alcalde de Antofagasta que nos acompañó, la directora de la SENAPRED”, señaló el Presidente Kast. Agregó que los alcaldes de distintas comunas se conectaron virtualmente, entre ellos representantes de Taltal y Mejillones, algunas de las zonas más afectadas por el evento meteorológico.El Mandatario valoró también el despliegue transversal de los parlamentarios de la región. “Agradezco la participación también de los parlamentarios, quienes todos, sin distinción alguna, los senadores y los diputados, fueron informando y estuvieron desplegados o conectados permanentemente con las distintas zonas”, afirmó.Durante la reunión se revisó especialmente la situación de Tocopilla, provincia donde ya se encuentra desplegado el Jefe de la Defensa Nacional, general de brigada Eduardo Cuadra. Asimismo, se analizó el estado de las rutas, la infraestructura sanitaria y la operación de los albergues.Respecto de la conectividad, el Presidente informó que se han ido recuperando paulatinamente los accesos. “Ya hay una ruta abierta hacia Tocopilla. Se sigue trabajando en dos rutas más. Hemos tenido la colaboración de la empresa privada, que junto con las maquinarias de Vialidad del MOP, han ido habilitando cada uno de estos accesos”, explicó.El Jefe de Estado señaló además que la infraestructura sanitaria se encuentra, en términos generales, operativa, aunque con una afectación mayor en Tocopilla, y destacó que los albergues han permitido atender a personas afectadas tanto en esa comuna como en Antofagasta.Junto con enfrentar la contingencia, el Presidente Kast planteó la necesidad de sacar aprendizajes para fortalecer la preparación de la región ante futuros eventos. “De estas tragedias podemos aprender hacia adelante.
