Fahmy: Golan is occupied Syrian territory, Colombia should reverse recognition decision
Bogota, Aug.19 (SANA)Arab League Secretary-General, Nabil Fahmy, said the Golan is occupied Syrian territory whose legal status is established under international resolutions, calling on Colombia to reconsider its decision regarding what it described as “Israeli sovereignty” over the territory.
Fahmy urged Colombia to return to its longstanding approach of respecting theUnited NationsCharter and international law.
In an interview with a Colombian radio station, excerpts of which were published on X, Fahmy said Arab states expected Colombia to uphold the UN Charter and the principles that have traditionally guided its diplomacy.
Fahmy said sovereignty is safeguarded by international law, not by imposing fait accompli or through political recognition, which he said does not provide a legal basis for sovereignty over theoccupied Syrian Golan.
Fahmy added that the credibility of the international system depended on applying its rules and principles consistently and without selectivity.
Colombia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Aug. 10 recognizing what it called “Israeli sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian Golan, a decision that drew widespread condemnation from Syria, several Arab and Islamic countries and the United Nations, which described it as a violation of international law.
