Arab heritage takes center stage in new musical operetta
Damascus, Aug. 19 (SANA)An operetta drawing onmusical and folkloric traditionsfrom across the Arab world has completed filming in Syria, bringing togethermusic, song and dancein four artistic tableaux highlighting the region’s cultural diversity and shared Arabic language.
Land of Civilizations and Arabictakes audiences from the rhythms of Egypt and the Maghreb to the musical traditions of the Levant, the Gulf, Sudan and otherArab African countries.
The production has entered editing and color correction ahead of its release and is being produced by Shine Media and Natali artistic production and distribution companies.
Writer and director Faisal Banyalmarjeh said the operetta is structured around four interconnected geographical and artistic tableaux, with each section designed to reflect the cultural andmusical identityof a different part of theArab world.
The first combines Egypt and the Maghreb, blending Nile Valley rhythms with North Africanmusical traditions, while the second draws on the heritage of Syria and the wider Levant.
The third tableau explores theArabian Peninsula and the Gulf,beginning with Saudi Arabia and incorporating musical styles and rhythms associated with the region. The final section turns to Sudan and other Arab African countries.
Banyalmarjeh said each tableau retains its distinctive character while a common musical and linguistic thread connects the four sections.
Dawoud Smadi composed and arranged the music, drawing ontraditional rhythms and stylesassociated with the regions featured in the production.
The operetta brings togetherArab performers, including Kuwaiti artist Mohammed Al Balushi, the Nirvana performance troupe, a choir and child singers.
Dance performances inspired by local folklore accompany the songs, with costumes, movements and rhythms reflecting the traditions of each region.
Banyalmarjeh said the choreography was designed as an integral part of the production,combining lyrics, music, movement and imagery within each tableau.
The operetta is scheduled to premiere on Baraem al-Mustaqbal television channel, with stage performances set to begin in Damascus before moving to otherSyrian governorates.
