Ebola cases top 5,000 as outbreak spreads in DR Congo

Kinshasa, Aug. 19 (SANA)Confirmed Ebola cases inthe Democratic Republic of Congohave surpassed 5,000 as the outbreak continues to spread, the country’s public health institute said.The cumulative number of confirmed cases has reached 5,021, including 2,378 deaths, Reuters reported, citing the institute’s latest epidemiological update.The Bundibugyo strain ofthe Ebola virusis currently spreading in the country, with no approved treatments or vaccines specifically available for the strain.Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, including those who have died from the disease. Symptoms can include fever, vomiting and diarrhea and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.Health authorities are continuing to monitor the outbreak and take measures to contain the spread of the virus.
