In his welcoming speech, the Prime Minister highlighted the powerful desire for freedom of the Estonian people, which became more and more visible and stronger in the second half of the 1980s. According to him, the desire for freedom ultimately possessed hundreds of thousands of people and in the Baltic chain it united nearly two million Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians.
"It was this powerful will of the people that broke the power of the occupation. We must be grateful to everyone who participated in the movement to restore independence. Each person gave their face and voice to the consistent demand of the Estonian people to end the occupation," said Michal.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the cooperation of various political forces and social movements was of decisive importance in reaching the restoration of independence. "At the decisive moments, we were able to agree on a common goal. The decision of August 20 and later the Constitutional Assembly created in cooperation with the Supreme Council and the Estonian Congress showed that Estonia's success was born from the ability to cooperate," said Michal.
The Prime Minister recalled the meeting with the former Prime Ministers of Estonia in the Rüütelkonna building on Tuesday. At the beginning of the meeting, a photo commemoration of the restoration of Estonia's independence was opened, which brings together 143 photos from 78 events in the period from October 28, 1980 to August 31, 1994 - from 40 letters to the withdrawal of Russian troops.
According to Michal, the photos give an emotional and powerful picture of the events of that time and of people who were united by the desire to know the truth, remember their history, decide their own future and live in a free country.
"The decision made in the hall of the Supreme Council on August 20, 1991 restored the national independence of Estonia and confirmed the national continuity of the Republic of Estonia, established in 1918. The importance of this decision - and the desire for freedom of the Estonian society that stood behind it - is difficult to overestimate," he said.
Michal invited the members of the August 20 Club and all the people who contributed to the restoration of independence to continue to be an example in shaping the future of Estonia. "Continue to be an example and an inspiration in making tomorrow's Estonia better. Long live Estonia!"
The 20 August Club unites politicians who voted for the restoration of Estonia's independence on August 20, 1991. The club traditionally organizes events dedicated to the restoration of Estonian statehood on the occasion of the re-independence day.

Tema sõnul valdas vabaduse soov lõpuks sadu tuhandeid inimesi ja Balti ketis ühendas see ligi kahte miljonit eestlast, lätlast ja leedulast. „Just see rahva võimas tahe murdis okupatsioonivõimu. Me peame olema tänulikud kõigile, kes iseseisvuse taastamise liikumises osalesid. Iga inimene andis oma näo ja hääle Eesti rahva järjekindlale nõudmisele lõpetada okupatsioon,“ ütles Michal. Peaminister rõhutas, et iseseisvuse taastamiseni jõudmisel oli määrava tähtsusega eri poliitiliste jõudude ja ühiskondlike liikumiste koostöö. „Otsustavatel hetkedel suudeti leppida kokku ühine eesmärk. 20. augusti otsus ning hiljem Ülemnõukogu ja Eesti Kongressi koostöös loodud Põhiseaduse Assamblee näitasid, et Eesti edu sündis koostöövõimest,“ sõnas Michal. Peaminister meenutas teisipäeval Rüütelkonna hoones toimunud kohtumist Eesti endiste peaministritega. Kohtumise alguses avati Eesti iseseisvuse taastamise fotomeenutus, mis koondab 143 fotot 78 sündmusest ajavahemikus 28. oktoobrist 1980 kuni 31. augustini 1994 – 40 kirjast kuni Vene vägede väljaviimiseni. Michali sõnul annavad fotod emotsionaalse ja võimsa pildi toonastest sündmustest ning inimestest, keda ühendas soov teada tõde, mäletada oma ajalugu, otsustada ise oma tuleviku üle ja elada vabas riigis. „Ülemnõukogu saalis 20. augustil 1991 langetatud otsus taastas Eesti riikliku iseseisvuse ning kinnitas 1918. aastal loodud Eesti Vabariigi riiklikku järjepidevust. Selle otsuse tähtsust – ja selle taga seisnud Eesti ühiskonna vabadusetahet – on raske üle hinnata,“ ütles ta. Michal kutsus 20. Augusti Klubi liikmeid ja kõiki iseseisvuse taastamisse panustanud inimesi olema jätkuvalt eeskujuks Eesti tuleviku kujundamisel. „Olge jätkuvalt eeskujuks ning inspiratsiooniks homse Eesti paremaks tegemisel. Elagu Eesti!“ 20. Augusti Klubi ühendab poliitikuid, kes hääletasid 20. augustil 1991 Eesti iseseisvuse taastamise poolt.
