President emphasises moral responsibility on World Humanitarian Day19 August 2026

Emphasising that a nation's size does not diminish its moral responsibility, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today stated that the Maldives has a duty to speak clearly against violence targeting humanitarian personnel and to stand in defence of the vulnerable.

In his message on World Humanitarian Day, the President said the Maldives stands in firm solidarity with humanitarian personnel around the world who brave danger to serve the greater good of humanity. He noted that the need for humanitarian support is increasing amid conflict, displacement, hunger and climate-related crises.

He highlighted that nowhere is the collapse of humanitarian protection more evident today than in Gaza, adding that the intentional obstruction of humanitarian aid, blockades and violence against relief personnel represent grave violations of international law. The President strongly condemned these violations, reaffirmed the Maldives' unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people, and called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.

He noted that because small states depend on a rules-based international order in which international law is upheld equally for all, and as a party to the Fourth Geneva Convention, the Maldives remains steadfast in its commitment to international humanitarian law, and the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel. The President called on all nations to respect the sanctity of humanitarian operations and uphold the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence.

In honouring these principles, the President paid profound tribute to those who risk, and all too often give, their lives in the service of humanity. He added that their sacrifice demands that the international community guarantee the uncompromised protection and safety of all humanitarian personnel.

The President further reiterated these sentiments in amessagepublished on his official X account today.

World Humanitarian Day is observed annually on 19 August to honour aid workers killed or injured in crisis zones and to celebrate those who risk their lives to provide life-saving support.
