Minister for Policing updates Parliament on the recent increase in CCTV camera installations
Uh thank you honorable speaker sir. I thank the honorable member for his question. [clears throat] I think it's a a great question uh very relevant and uh to what uh the police are doing and in line with government's commitment to improve uh capabilities for the police uh to enhance their operations. But before I do that, uh, Mr. Speaker, sir, I I wish to inform the house, Mr. Speaker, sir, uh, on three questions that was raised by the honorable Nan yesterday uh during the debate relating to three police reports in Singapa. One was at Kulu, one was about uh the uh house that was burnt and uh the third one was on the uh farm. Honorable speaker, sir, for your information, uh those three instance has been attended to and uh police have notified the honorable member too uh early this morning. Uh I wish to take this time to think uh to thank the police officer at Singatoka for their response to that. I hope in future that we don't need to use the parliamentary floor to address some of these operational uh issues. There are processes in place. Yeah. And if uh we are able to do that uh if we are able to do that it'll be most useful that we test the systems at the operation level. Yeah, operation level and that's important. Uh but I thank the honorable member for raising the issue yesterday to me. [clears throat] Mr. Speaker, sir, uh before I dwell into the actual uh reply for the honorable member, I also wish to register the importance of uh CCTV in the last uh few days and how we've attended to some cases on records sent by the population or community that has greatly assisted the police in identifying, arresting, and charging culprits that were involved in uh uh various uh incidents in the community. Mr. Speaker sir uh government is committed to ensuring that the Fiji police force is well equipped through effective policing practices [clears throat] and also modern technologies that it wants to produce introduce [clears throat] to enable proactive uh crime prevention strategies for the Fiji police force. As I had mentioned yesterday, uh the crime landscape and security landscape has changed significantly and uh therefore uh we need to adopt uh the most effective means of addressing some of the challenges that the police face in [snorts] uh making sure that our community, our people are safe and secure. To achieve this, there has been a significant investment towards the CCTV camera installation program under the Fiji police force safety safe city project which is part of the 4-year Fiji police force strategic plan 2025 to 2029. [clears throat] This aligns with the national development plan and the ministry's strategic plan 2025 to 2030. Why this is done? Uh Mr. Speaker, sir, the primary purpose of a CCTV camera installation is I'll mention a few here. One, uh it's a deterrent. It's to deter and prevent criminal activities wherever it is. Uh two, uh support intelligence work and evidence submission in legal proceedings. It also helps greatly. Part three, monitor movement of people to promote public safety and improve public confidence. [snorts] Support traffic management and monitoring on the roads and highways. Uh offer realtime monitoring and rapid responses and operational efficiency in response to emergency incidents. Last and not least actually it's about support to enhance police operations for this particular project. Uh Mr. Speaker sir where it is under this project uh there are 230 CCTV cameras across uh the 50 sites along the suba and now sorry corridor. Currently a total of 97 cameras are in operations and if I just want to wish to mention just a few where they are uh 75 cameras between substand market area [clears throat] for those that are listening out there I'm sure I'll be extra careful as [clears throat] you walk the street in suba 12 installed around Ratsukuna Park uh eight in uh around Albert park and 15 more cameras expected to be installed in the coming months. Uh two around Stinson parade and more cameras to be installed beyond the CBD along including necess flex staff and turk Mr. Speaker sir there are also plans to expand to the western division along Nandi and Loka corridor. [snorts] Also a uh a question on the technical specification and capabilities here part of the question uh Mr. Speaker sir, these are higher resolution uh cameras to help uh for and the identification um monitoring uh recording of uh everything that is to be seen to see, monitor, record and identify. uh in a in a very simple way. [snorts] Mr. Speaker, sir, uh to justify uh the installation of this uh the current uh police act uh uh 1965 section 17 uh clause 5 covers that particular part. uh there are also plans to have that included in the I think it's a a provision of that in the new police sector 2026 which is still with the standing committee. Uh Mr. Speaker sir [snorts] uh I am mindful we are mindful of uh concerns uh by public and society where it infringes into people's lives. uh we are very careful with that that these laws are also intended to safeguard all these issues here. Thank you Mr. Speaker sir.
