Theme: “No fool, tap a road surface”
The annual Road Safety Month of the Road Safety Institute (VVI) officially started on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The official kick-off took place in the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall. This year's theme is: “No fool, tap a road surface.”
Attention to road safety
The meeting started with the singing of the Surinamese national anthem, with both verses being sung. Then Martin Irosemito led the prayer.
VVI director Joanne A Draai emphasized that the official start is only the beginning of a month full of activities. The VVI organizes various activities during the month to increase awareness about road safety.
One of the next activities concerns a lecture on corpse transport, given by subdistrict judge Danielle Karamatili. Activities are also planned in Latour. Road Safety Month concludes with the presentation of a traffic dashboard.
Worrying number of road deaths
During her speech, A Draai focused on the number of road deaths. According to her, 61 road deaths have now been registered in 2026. She expressed her concern about the circumstances under which several road accidents occur.
Minister of Justice and Security Harish Monorath also addressed those present. He pointed out that Suriname ended the year last year with 61 traffic fatalities. According to the minister, the same number has already been reached.
“Things are not going well. The figures don't lie,” said Minister Monorath.
The minister announced that from now on additional traffic checks will take place on the roads. He called on all road users to take responsibility for their own safety and that of others.
“Take care of yourself, be safe and participate in traffic correctly,” said Minister Monorath.
The minister's speech was followed by a warm-up led by Lennox A Draai. The participants then prepared for the 5 kilometer long walk.
Deputy director of the VVI, Purcy Landveld, looked back on the preparations. According to him, these went smoothly. Participants could register via a registration form. T-shirts were also printed for the participants.
"The preparation was not difficult. A link was shared via WhatsApp and Facebook where people could register. In addition, T-shirts were printed, for which the participants paid SRD 350. And here we are at our 5 kilometer walk," says Landveld.
Awareness among road users
Tachana Loche of the National Assembly also expressed her appreciation for the VVI's initiative. According to her, there is still insufficient awareness about road safety among part of society.
“The most important thing is that when you are behind the wheel, you are not under the influence,” Loche emphasized.
Regarding the theme of Road Safety Month, Loche indicated that he recognized himself as a Surinamese. According to her, the theme fits well with Surinamese society.
With Road Safety Month, the VVI wants to draw extra attention to responsible traffic behavior and to reducing the number of road casualties during the month of August.

Het thema van dit jaar luidt: “No du gek, tap a wegdek.” Aandacht voor verkeersveiligheid De bijeenkomst begon met het zingen van het Surinaams volkslied, waarbij beide coupletten werden gezongen. Vervolgens ging Martin Irosemito voor in gebed. VVI-directeur Joanne Adraai benadrukte dat de officiële start slechts het begin vormt van een maand vol activiteiten. Het VVI organiseert gedurende de maand verschillende activiteiten om de bewustwording over verkeersveiligheid te vergroten. Een van de eerstvolgende activiteiten betreft een lezing over lijkvervoer, verzorgd door kantonrechter Danielle Karamatili. Ook in Latour staan activiteiten gepland. De Verkeersveiligheidsmaand wordt afgesloten met de presentatie van een verkeersdashboard. Zorgwekkend aantal verkeersdoden Adraai stond tijdens haar toespraak stil bij het aantal verkeersdoden. Volgens haar zijn in 2026 inmiddels 61 verkeersdoden geregistreerd. Zij sprak haar bezorgdheid uit over de omstandigheden waaronder verschillende verkeersongevallen plaatsvinden. Ook minister van Justitie en Veiligheid Harish Monorath sprak de aanwezigen toe. Hij wees erop dat Suriname vorig jaar het jaar afsloot met 61 verkeersdoden. Volgens de minister is hetzelfde aantal nu al bereikt. “Het gaat niet goed. De cijfers liegen niet,” stelde minister Monorath. De minister kondigde aan dat vanaf nu extra verkeerscontroles op de wegen zullen plaatsvinden. Hij riep alle weggebruikers op om verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor hun eigen veiligheid en voor die van anderen. “Let goed op jezelf, wees veilig en neem op de juiste manier deel aan het verkeer,” aldus minister Monorath. Na de toespraak van de minister volgde een warming-up onder leiding van Lennox Adraai. Vervolgens maakten de deelnemers zich op voor de 5 kilometer lange wandelloop. Onderdirecteur van het VVI, Purcy Landveld, blikte terug op de voorbereidingen. Volgens hem verliepen deze vlot. Deelnemers konden zich via een registratieformulier aanmelden. Ook werden T-shirts voor de deelnemers bedrukt. “De voorbereiding was niet moeilijk. Er werd via WhatsApp en Facebook een link gedeeld waar mensen zich konden registreren. Daarnaast werden T-shirts bedrukt, waarvoor de deelnemers SRD 350 betaalden. En hier zijn we dan bij onze 5 kilometer wandelloop,” aldus Landveld. Bewustwording onder weggebruikers Ook Tachana Loche van De Nationale Assemblee sprak haar waardering uit voor het initiatief van het VVI. Volgens haar bestaat er onder een deel van de samenleving nog onvoldoende bewustwording over verkeersveiligheid. “Het allerbelangrijkste is dat je, wanneer je achter het stuur zit, niet onder invloed bent,” benadrukte Loche. Over het thema van de Verkeersveiligheidsmaand gaf Loche aan zich als Surinamer erin te herkennen. Volgens haar sluit het thema goed aan bij de Surinaamse samenleving.
